Broadband Recommendations Please

Yeh, Zen have a monthly contrqact and are definately one of the best around, but unfortunately cost al lot.

Yesterday I connected to Be Broadband which have a 3 month contract followed by rolling monthly contract. 24Mb for £24, although due to shit cabling and distance from the exchange my speed is only 14Mb.

Not bad though and yesterday my download speed hit 1.5Mb per sec :D

I pay 24.99 a month from Virgin for "unlimited" usage "up to 8mb" speed..monthly contract, if I cancel within 12 months I have to pay £50

UK FSN are an Entanet reseller and do monthly contracts, with a £50-odd setup fee.

I've had two contracts with them (different addresses) and they've been good. Their 30GB peak / 300GB off-peak service is £20 a month.

Bump as I too need advice on best value broadband with best service according to real people not some crappy advert....any recommendations greatfully recieved...

If you download a lot then bethere are great, and you could get up to 24Mb sec .

Nice router as well.

24pm.

Zen are definitely the best imo.

A rule of thumb is to a) avoid really massive compannies, as the customer service will be crap, and b) to avoid any free broadband offer, all of which have been disasterous for customers.

i used to think that, but the past few months they've been fucking useless.

when we moved they fucked up and we had an extended period of down time, they apologised and promised a refund. refund never arrived so we complained and were told they had no record of such a promise and would only refund for half the downtime. we complained - no joy. refund still hasn't arrived. will be complaining again shortly.

we've also been fucked about with regular short periods of downtime, usually a few minutes several times a day and also been told that we'd gone over our download limit, and blocked from access to the net, despite being 27Gb in credit.

we complained - they said they'd get back to us - did they fuck!

we joined Zen because of the excellent service, but the last few months they've been consistently shit.

fuck 'em

they are very good, but as has already been said, they cost far too much. My £35 rate (8mb, in theory) gets me a cap of 50gb, then £1 a gb thereafter. so when i hit 70-odd gb a month it's up to £55 or more.

Be offers a theoretical 24mb speed, uncapped, for £24. So I am going to swap..

eta: actually, Zen also totally fucked me before Xmas - i moved my pay date and it was all signed off and agreed. Then I got an email invoice on the old paydate, called them straight away to explain that they really couldn't take the money out. They told me it was issued automatically, in error, and the money wouldn't be deducted. But then it was, it left me broke r and it caused something else to bounce which cost me bank charges. They were really apologetic about it but still..

look at Eclipse ... customer service appears to be based in Exeter ... I have mates who use them all over the country tho'...been withe'm for nearly 6 months...only ISP I've never had any problems with in that sort of time period...touch wood...except for the time I got free Net access for 3 years... I want an ISP like that agin!!!! :D

pm me if you want to give me monies for referring you. LOL!

moi £14.99 unlimited 8mb..sometimes_regularly slamming 40 gig a week between 3 of us but I mostly do the downloading.:p

Gosh - I've never heard of any probs with Zen before now! Have been recommended them countless times.

Maybe they're sitting on their laurels a bit.

Be sound good.

I'm with PlusNet, who have been good until summer 2006 when they had a long period of downtime (2 weeks!).

What ISP do all the really geeky people use?

While we’d love everyone to enjoy our superfast broadband, unfortunately you’re just too far away from your nearest BT telephone exchange for us to provide you with our service. We’re really sorry.

If you move closer to a BT exchange in future, simply provide us with your new postcode and telephone number to find out if you can enjoy the power of Be.
my rural line(2mb)

^^^porkies atm tbh

or

Unfortunately Be is not available in your area yet.
my townie connection(8mb)

pfft ::: :D

obviously it's all down to BT scummage and the allowances given to Businesses & Other Bodies...your General Public is denied access to the proper lines available down here..coz they can..not because it's not wanted or not available<<<says conspiraloony_he. :(

i've never had a problem with zen. all the connection difficulties i had turned out to be at my end not theirs. but it was their most excellent customer services that talked me through the situation till i found the problem

zen cost but are worth it IMO

this is what i've been saying to mrs elvis everytime she asks why we're paying more than her friend with talktalk...virgin...aol...

it's just that since they started to piss us about, my arguments have been sounding a little weak. to myself also

it'a a shame, i really like Zen and like Han have recommended them to loads of people. maybe they just don't like me  :(

See RaverDrew's post.

Never cease to be pleased when I get 1500Ks displayed for a download.

Sony site said it should take 6 minutes to download something. Took 12seconds.

So:

Avoid any broadband service with a usage cap.
Be is looking promising at present and has opened up I think 300-500 new exchange areas, the company announced today.
Never use a free service, they are all shit.
If unhappy with your provider, from tomorrow it should be much easier to get the MAC number off of your existing ISP so you can change without loss of access under new Ofcom regs which come into effect Feb 14.
If you can get cable, get cable, it's usually a lot more durable, though more pricey by the Mb - but I have had maybe 12 hours downtime in 5 or 6 years, so I think that's the trade-off, if access is critical.
I signed my mum up to Bulldog. They were not perfect, and I had some issues at first with them, but played some cards and got a better service and a refund.
Check the small print for what you actually get, some providers don't even sent a modem and expect you to get one yourself.
Personally, I feel like the state of the ADSL market is still a nightmare, it is very hard to make value judgements on service.
Watch out for contention rates, capping and the distance from the exchange.
Good luck.
