Brixton's Reliance Arcade - news and discussion

Not Brixton, but Jones the Butcher has been in Herne Hill since 1962. But not Brixton.

And Ashton Maxwell Funeral Directors in Brixton, (formerly W H Whibley), has been here for more than 100 years according to their website. But they're owned by a big corporation now, so not valid either.

Now there’s a psychogeographical conundrum. I’ve never thought of Jones the Butcher as ‘Not Brixton’. Is No1 Dulwich Rd the popularly acknowledged beginning of Herne Hill?

Looking at it another way, it’s the building facing the eastern end of Brixton Water Lane. 150m along the street are places such as Khan’s and the Hootenanny. They’re Very Brixton in my mental map of the world.

It occurred to me as I walked past the other day that Supertone might now be the oldest independent small business in Brixton, it's been there since at least the mid-80s.

Morleys is older of course, but I can't, off the top of my head, think of any small businesses that have survived that long.

Any suggestions?
The printers along just along from the Albert have probably been around for a while. 'Alberts Plaice,' on Coldharbour Lane......?

Brixton Wholefoods has been here since the late '70's

So from what I can remember it was there when I was first in area in 81

Old school off license.

Is Brixton Wholefoods a direct descendent of the Brixton and Bangladesh place formerly in the David Greig shop?
This is on Lambeth Landmark - an 1983 photo. But I bought my musesli there in 1979 when it was "Brixton and Benagladesh" and also ran a stall in the Wandsworth Arndale Centre.

I really got interested in the place in February 1979 when another engineer working with me in Grundig in Sydenham pointed out that I really ought to buy "The Incredible Shrinking Dickies" - one of many records for sale in their window at the time.
I bought it and was not disappointed - especially with the purple vinyl and the speeded up version of Black Sabbath's Paranoid.

So the owners of Reliance Arcade fucked over Universal Roots Records:

He said that Universal Roots and neighbouring traders lost a significant amount of business during a £1.3 million regeneration project designed to transform the arcade in 2019. "First they disrupt the business with building works without compensating us, then they make us pay full rent through most of the pandemic even when we were closed," he said. "It's outrageous."
