Brixton Splash this Sunday (2nd August, 2009)

Well it was a damn fine do from what I saw. Made it back for the last couple of hours and the place was heaving in the good weather, with the Blacker Dread/Vibes FM rig providing the most congested in-demand spot. Met a load of mates and folks I hadn't seen for some time and it all seemed really good tempered. The rig down Atlantic Road, in the shadow of Bradys, was pumping out some lovely old tunes to a happy crowd.

Probably needs a little fine tuning - the main stage is still proving less of a draw than the soundsystems for example - but it's encouraging that something like that can build up with apparently so little promotion. The weather played a huge part of course but there seemed a fair bit more going on and more reason to stick around this year, with a good spread of rigs, food places and some great little diversions like the Art Show on Rushcroft.

The best Splash yet imo. And I'm pleasantly surprised to be able to say that.

no. they nearly appeared at the country fair last year, but didn't get there in time

They should have been allowed to play anyway. When they rang and said they were delayed and were going home the correct response was 'Don't Turn Around'.....:D

I went to Splash and had a nice time. Enjoyed the music. Wandered among the stalls and spoke to a nice young jewellery designer. Was fairly horrified that she had to pay more for her stall at Splash then she did for a stall at Camden Market

Had some Franco Manca's pizza, see:

^^^ mmmmmmm.
you're making me hungry now :o

i very very enjoyed the rushcroft road art
the stall with the brixton pound and transition town stuff had me leaving with a fair few good things to think about getting involved with.

i was ok with the crowds and stuff mainly cos i didn't spend all day there, had a couple of friends with me, and i knew i could bugger off home easily :o

What happened? Did I dream they were gonna play?
Larry was down to do something, but when it started to over run the stagemanager made sure all his mates played.: ( it was a shame coz Larry was doing stuff with Tenor Fly which would have been cool.

I've not seen a single poster or flyer anywhere in Brixton, and I've still no idea what times the bands are on.

Gotta love the way they've completely written out Pat (ex Albert landlord) from their history. It was his idea in the first place wasn't it?

Thanks for that.. .. I did get my goat a bit when I watched the promo video online, with someone taking all the credit and hyping it as her idea.. .. Especially when, after putting it on my cv, I was questioned about any involvement in the first year at all, at an interview.. Made me look rather foolish, yes not hard I know . . .:D :hmm:

The latest issue of Lambeth Life reckons that 12,000 people attended this year's Splash.

12,000! Really? I didn't go so no idea if that figure is at all accurate, but it didn't look that busy from the photos...

Perhaps they counted everyone that went through Brixton on a bus that day...

It was heaving at the end to be fair, so 12000 doesn't sound that impossible. Unlikely perhaps, but who knows how they supposedly estimate these things.

The article also mentioned they were going to look for corporate sponsorship for next year. So - to be cynical for a second - maybe they came up with the figure 12,000, made sure it got into print, et voila a nice impressive sum to take to the companies.

Or maybe there was 12,000 people there. But that sounds like loads...

. . . and Community Police Consultative Group. Who I had a chat to.

I was on the CPCG stall - thanks for visiting! Good talk all afternoon, lot of ideas. Posted a link to Urban 75 on the Lambeth Have Your Shout Facebook page. Vox pop videos (from Flip) take a loooong time to upload (anyone any suggestions?) but they are worth a look (first should be uploaded in about 40 mins).

Had a wander later - Atlantic Road was best for me.

Thanks. Worth looking at U75 as policing comes up. :)

Brixton Splash: £25,000 - Urban Art: Nothing

This makes my blood boil.

Lambeth Council want to charge Urban Art £2,800 for us to use our own street to run our extremely successful community led, fund raising Art Fair which has done a fantastic job of showcasing the rich creative talent in this borough for the last nine years.

Yet they can find the funds, £25,000 plus, for their own arts event.

This is not fair and certainly not right.
