Brixton Splash this Sunday (2nd August, 2009)

Oval House squat on Rushcroft Road is open and housing an art exhibition. That is all I know.

PTG posted the bill earlier on via the http://www.brixtonsplash.co.uk link.

The usual Alabama 3 business and Blacker Dread's got Vibes FM playing through his rig amongst other things.

Agree with you on the organisation though. Everyone I know only seems to have heard about it in the last few days, which sucks very badly indeed. I don't know who's meant to have been promoting this, but they've either been spectacularly lazy or particularly incompetent.

I've still absolutely no idea what's on. It really is spectacularly poorly organised.

The website - http://www.brixtonsplash.co.uk/ - has an image that's just slightly too small to read most of the details of what's going on, no mention of when, surely a simple PDF download of the programme would have been fairly straightforward to do?

But you can watch a "documentary" about it. That hasn't inspired me to attend either.

I've not seen a single poster or flyer anywhere in Brixton, and I've still no idea what times the bands are on.

Gotta love the way they've completely written out Pat (ex Albert landlord) from their history. It was his idea in the first place wasn't it?

Not seen a single poster or flyer either. And even the word of mouth seems to be late and slightly desperate. The more I think about it, the more lousy the lack of effort seems.

The one saving grace is that there was apparently a bit of a big write up in the recent SLP, but that's all I've heard of.

The stage down coldharbour lane looks quite impressive from the bus. Means access from acre lane end is limted. :hmm:

The lack of promotion doesn't make sense, unless they just take a 'build it and they will come approach'.

As for AJ, I really wish he'd just fuck off and live somewhere else and give up looking down his nose at Brixton and the effort other people make to provide for the community. It's really boring when every time he posts there's that whiff of pious indigination that seems to undermine and poke holes in everything. Better to join in, try and fail than to stay indoors and criticise from the lofty perch of the sad and lonely.:mad:

But it interferes with his shopping at Iceland!

They cunningly designed their website so that all the main content was embedded in a Flash interface - thus guaranteeing that anyone browsing the site with a phone will see jack diddly squat. Great work!

I had a quick look round, and there was very little that I could see that would interest me.

I do hope to move away from Brixton at some point, but it's not quite as easy as you make it out to be.

Anyway, despite your rant, I found the egg poacher I wanted in Argos, lunches from Iceland, and a few "early pictures" of some bits of Splash.

Apparently this is a bicycle stunt team or something, outside Argos.

... and it wouldn't be Brixton without the preacher that you can't understand a word he's saying.

It was advertised in the last Lambeth Life. I don't know if every property gets it, but we get it without fail on our estate every two weeks.

it's good so far - i've watched a team of breakdancing kids, and seen a man of, erm, indeterminate age (50s? 60s?) doing backflips and balancing a barstool on his chin

well sunny as well :)

Seeing as people make phonecalls with a phone and browse the internet with a computer, I can't see the problem.

:p

There certainly was a problem last night in the pub with several people interested in finding out about today's event and all I could show them was a blank screen on my phone.

Oh, and you're a little behind the times. Millions of people in the UK use their phones to surf the internet. That's why most sites ensure that you can read their content on them.

Had a look around about an hour ago.

There is more than last year. There are stalls in the market area (Electric Avenue) and a stage up the end of CHL. Usual competing Sound Systems. The Phoenix was open.

A few local community groups there -Transition Town and Community Police Consultative Group. Who I had a chat to.

I see TFL did there best to support it by closing Victoria line. Wankers. Do you think they do this kind of thing on purpose?

THe new look Ritzy bar seemed busy.

I took a wander around too and the bit around Coldharbour Lane was very busy. I don't think I've ever heard the word 'Brixton' shouted out so many times! You wouldn't get that in SE24, oh no.

so i have to say i am positively surprised.

the layout this year was the best one yet. i have to admit i didn't really attend the spash this year however on my way out of brixton i had a very nice 20 mins by the argos sound system with two djs playing dub-y blues type of music -which i enjoyed a lot.

on my way back into brixton this eve there was a very funky (and also very good looking 4 young man) band on which i must find out what they are called to see them again..??

and then in rushcroft road the art exhibition was also fantastic. i really enjoyed seeing some local artists work (and there was quite a lot of good stuff) and to have some positive street action just before i am leaving brixton.

so thumbs up from me -i have however avoided the main soundsystem at the end of our road as i always found that one a bit aggressive in previous years.

that's a shame because I'm sure the atmosphere suffered greatly for you not being there to take part.

Probably not. Editor's pictures make it look quite busy down there, and I really don't like those kind of crowds. I did have a wander up towards the station then back through the market when I took those few photos, I guess even though it was noon people were still setting up. I have no idea what time it was officially supposed to start.

How have I missed this... what do you mean "leaving Brixton"... :( ?

homer house at rushcroft road was open -i am really glad i managed to see it just before closing time.

i will still be in south east london -but not a brixtonite anymore.

Were they four black guys playing rocky stuff? If so it'll be The Thirst, as seen at two Offlines :)
