Its not just you though wiskers, its the OP! I never heard of such a thing in all my puff... scept on eastenders :( ;)

Me?

I only said I can't stand crowds so rarely shop there  :p

Do market stalls come under any sort of checks from health and safety or other offical bodies regarding the quality of food?

I went to a market in East London and most of the fruit was rotten and the meat was covered in flies.

Dunno about the quality, but they keep an eye out for illegal bush meat.

Wouldn't dream of using the butcher's in Electric Avenue. Years ago, in the middle of a sweltering summer, I saw a white van pull up to one of the butchers. The door was opened and hundreds of flies came swarming out of this unrefrigerated white van carrying meat.

uurgh!

same way the meat gets delivered to many small butchers and a lot of restaurants.

as for the fruit, it can go off quicker, but usually because it's riper when you buy it. It lasts longer from Saninsburys, but you've often got to wait a few days before you can eat it, so it all the same really.

Think you are losing sight of what meat is. Not so long ago it was a great sweaty shitting animal with a load of flies buzzing around it.

Be alright if you give it a bit of a wash and cook it properly!

Very true, but it still put me off a bit:o

steak

the price of steaks in the market is fantastic. Huge slabs of red meat for just a couple of quid. Wonderful.
Live life on the edge - shop at Brixton Market.
:D

PS. Wouldn't buy a chicken there though. I am not bloody stupid

But has it been properly hung? And what about the hygiene issues??? The smells coming from those butchers really put me off.

Hate to say it, but the smell of any bulk butchers is likely to put anyone off. I've had the misfortune of visiting larger abbatoirs supplying the supermarkets and catering trade and they're every bit as nasty -I suspect we're getting too used to the shrinkwrapped homogenity of supermarket meat and posher butchers now. I can't say I don't wince at the smell of decaying meat + bleach at the end of the day by the market though.

Some of the finest meat I've ever had has come from some of the most dodgy and poorly maintained sources. Amazing steaks in South America in particular - probably best not to know that dead cows were frequently just sold from a unrefrigerated stall by the roadside.

I'm not sure I can wax lyrical about the quality of meat in Brixton market, but I honestly suspect that the vast majority is at least as good as the shit sold in Tescos, albeit presented badly. I stlll prefer chicken there on the bone mind - there's something I don't trust about those slightly slimy pre-frozen breasts and at least you can tell more about the condition of the meat from the skin and appearance of a full piece of chicken.

Who remembers Murray's Meat Market (where Iceland is now)?

Used to sell bags of meat at the end of the day

I used to go there with my gran all the time. I think there's still one in Croydon if you fancy the full-on retro experience.

*puts hands up*

Does anyone remember Stringers frozen food shop on Clapham High Street (towards Clapham North - I think it's either Blockbuster or the motorcycle place now)

yep, it's still there - and actually seems a bit more hygienic than your average Brixton market butchers - certainly smells less.

I think I do. Was it quite near to the indoor market?

Yes, I had completely forgotten about the indoor market! Me and Mum used to go to a cafe in there every Saturday morning after the shopping.

:)

I have only the vaguest memory of the indoor market and cannot for the life of me work out where it was exactly & what's on the site now. I remember there was a pet shop & lots of places selling cheap & cheerful hair accessories! That would be about 1984 - 1986.

But have you seen them unloading the meat in shopping trolleys? It really is rank. I'll stick to Phillip's thanks, where the meat is properly refrigerated, and most important of all, well hung.

Yes, not you Minnie the Minx!!!:D

Well, back safe and sound even thought it took me an hour and a half and six trips to picawilly to escape.

I'm the last person to be an expert on this ;) but Murrays Meat still has a shop in Walworth Road, and a warehouse in Brandon Street (SE17) not far off.
