Brixton lido breakfast club

I had you in mind when I posted that, in relation to our conversations about wholesomeness :D

Yeah defo, is it chlorinated btw?
Dunno, haven't been there since I was about eight years old.

Thought so :)

(Also see my edit above as an alternative option) Edit: I see you have. Yeah! Let's do it!

Well, from the 19th it's Lido time. I was chatting to Han and we were saying how it would be really nice if a group of us were to meet up once a week (say a Monday morning to get the week off to a good start) for breakfast at the Lido)... the idea being that we could get there for our swims at whatever time we each wanted, but then have tea and toast together afterwards (in the little cafe there). For myself breakfast could be at 8am, for example, giving me 20-30 minutes before having to go to work.

Anyone interested in doing this?

Jesus Christ! This sounds horrific.. good luck. :D

it is definitly chlorinated but not as bad as some other indoor pools.

i also like the idea of meet ups that don't involve drinking :)

Yeah it probably is, just thought I'd check cos my skin gets irritated sometimes.

Ok, I'm going out Saturday night so Sunday is not an option so Saturday morning? I'll email you actually

It is chlorinated, but nowhere near as much as Brixton rec. You do encounter the odd leaf - especially towards the end of the season.

I will aim to go every weekday, but realistically that won't happen. Last year I went an average of 4 days a week (not usually at the weekend though). Looking back I'm quite pleased with that. This year I've sunk into a very bad routine of doing precisely nothing, so I really hope I can pull myself out of it.

This year I think I'll get a season ticket. The adult concessions is £55 which is a complete bargain!!

I've never encountered more than about 10 people on an early morning swim which is lovely. On hot weekends however, any later than about 10am and the place is totally rammed. :) Good for splashing about, but not for swimming.

Being outdoors is the only thing that makes me want to go. I hate indoor swimming pools......

Me too!

The idea of being in an outdoor swimming pool at 7am then brekkie at 8 during the summer is lovely :)

Do they open up the whole pool for lengths?

Let's do it!

I get tired after 10 lengths, and in between those ones as well :o

I'm not very into sustained swimming but I was told I should do it recently :(

Genuine question - obviously at half 7 in the morning the pool will be cold.

But is it 'cold when you get in but swimmable' cold or 'cold enough to knock the breath out of you' cold?

Well yeah to a degree. I was just after a general idea though, wouldn't vary all that much I'd have thought (and if the weather is really foul there's not much chance of me making it anyway.)

stupid question - everyone's different. But the sun rises earlier this time of year doesn't it? But the angle might be too acute to actually hit the pool??? I can't believe I'm typing this........

OMG! What the fuck are you going to do!!!

If you get in and swim you'll warm up - people do it all year round don't they at the Serpentine etc?

if l is a letter, and so is C, then the sum of those bits means the water's warm, because it's coloured in pink :)

That's a bit unneccessary isn't it.

Oh do calm down dear.

I was taking the piss out of you really quite gently for worrying about the cold.

Borrow Filter's batsuit if you're that worried.

I'm not worked up about it, but it read like a sarcastic dig to me. Anyway, I'm not going to have an argument about it.

It's still a perfectly sensible question IMO. All I wanted to know was whether the water is warm enough to swim for any length of time or whether I'd have to get out after a couple of minutes really.

I went to Tooting Lido two weeks ago, first weekend it opened, and it was knock-the-breath-out-of-you cold. It gets better after an initial 'arrgh!' and you can swim lengths, but you needed to be quite tough to stick it out - I managed three lengths of the 90m pool before retiring in a shiver.

However, I think it warms up as the season progresses - it was the first time I'd been but a lot of the regulars were remarking how cold it was.

I've been converted to the outdoor swimming now and will probably try to get to the Brockwell Park Lido this year.

Well to be honest, it is quite cold at the beginning of the season - take your breath away cold. By the end of the season it's warmed up a bit and is more "refreshing". The thing to do is to jump in (don't stick your toe in first.. it'll never go any further than that.. :D ) and then just swim as hard as you can.. you'll warm up in no time. It's not that cold! :D

Wimp!
My first Tooting swim this year was on April Fools Day - and THAT was cold - I only managed three lengths sans wetsuit back then rather than my planned mile, which I'd finished quite comfortably on the same date in 2005.

You may prefer the open air pool at the Oasis. All year round heating.. go in the middle of winter and there's a nice layer of steam coming off the pool..  Yer head gets abit cold though. :(
