I also think that although I don't want to see the standard template high street move into Brixton, I'd hate to see them turn these arcades into private residence or get rid of them completely.

ANd another thing - a standard template set of high street shops might just let the little shops thrive -increase of footfall... Walthamstow market manages...

yeah fair enough, i agree with both those things. any shops/stalls in central brixton has gotta be better than more private flats. there has been a bit of a decline in the market as a whole, so you can imagine a couple of 'brand' shops encouraging more shoppers, which is a good thing. But the crunch comes when you see whether all the small, diverse, sole-trader & family-run businesses can still afford the rents...if they can't, then you still end up with loads of empty shops.
