Brixton good service/unsung heroes

Don't think anyone's mentioned the guy in the Chocolate Box who, despite working in the smallest shop ever, is still cheery and polite to a fault, always wishing you a good evening/day even if you've only bought a box of matches.

fuck the mere good service award, that place deserves to be Grade 1 listed!
a true Brixton landmark

I like the geezer in there too, but by all accounts he can be a bit creepy with some female customers.

The guy who runs the little fruit shop towards Herne Hill, by the car radio place, is a bit of a diamond too.

*makes note* Certainly closer than going into Brixton and atlantic road. Most crucially, do they have those delicious custard tarts?

They have custard tarts (as well as other cakes), incredible tortilla
(but not every day sadly), cheeses/bread, meats, pulses and tons of other sweet and savoury stuff. Good coffee, great sangers and fantastic olive oil. Not to mention a really good selection of veg.

Really? The little chap with the dry hands?

The fruit shop guy let me off paying for some limes when i didn't have the right change and was genuinely grateful when i gave it him back a couple of days later.

Local shops for local people.

Well between 2 of us it's usually chicken jalfrezi, veg tikka masala, sag panir (side) and tarka dall (side) and 1 pilau rice. And pops....

And that's enough to have a snack for 2 the next day...

That is my v fav combo at Khan's after about 6 years of trying all different combos!

I really do think Khan's is the best curry in the universe.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm! I do like their sag panir.

We usually have machi bora (sp?) - fish curry, a tandoor mixed grill, couple of rotis and the sag panir. Might try the veg tikka masala on you rec.

Can't believe no-one's mentioned Brixton Cycles yet. Very friendly, very knowledgeable staff. Great shop, and a vital part of my mobility :)

I don't think the fishmongers on Atlantic road have had a big-up yet; always friendly and good stock.

Mash and Sons I think.

God, they must be REALLY dry if you've noticed how dry they are!

You notice people's hands when you put change in them. Especially when the coins make a noise when they hit the upturned palm.

:)

I second that -- I've always had great fish from there...*drools*...
i was gonna say them too....two cheery chappies and the best fish in the whole of brixton market. I never go anywhere else.

Also, all the staff in my local doctor's surgery, Iveagh House on Loughborough Road.

I think a lot also depends on your own attitude though.....the people in my local shop are usually grumpy as fuck, but that's cos they have a constant string of people in there giving them grief, swearing, absuing them and complaining that the special brew has gone up by 2p. when i go in there, smile and say hello, they change into totally different people. A hippy american woman i know used to always say "the smile that you give out comes back to you" - I agree. :)

Seconded votes for the newsagents inside the Tube station (a civilising force), and Mash and Sons because they not only sell good fish, they're willing to tackle fiddly jobs that lots of food retailers have forgotten how to do .... thank you young Master Mash for filleting me all those mackerel!!

Other people who deserve a medal: the folks at the Kingshield Pharmacy and Force Homecare, who are the soul of patience and kindess even when dealing with their often abusive, ignorant or 'confused' customers.

Martin's moved now, I think he went some time over Christmas. The shop's empty (its just been cleaned out this week). He was talking about opening up somewhere bigger on Norwood Road. But he was great, always got stuff on tick and he'd always go out of his way to say hello.

Brixton Cycles - a while ago as I was paying for £49 of stuff the bloke said "Shit, I only put £44 into the machine". I said "Here's a fiver" and he told me not to worry about it.

Also, deserve a mention for their "no manners no spanners" sign aimed at kids. Oh, and their early morning free services. Especially given the stupid prices for a service everywhere else in London.

house of bottles

What about Tony from the house of bottles..?? As helpful as they get.. always around.. seems to know everything and everybody.. and always makes newcomers to Brixton feel welcome

I was gonna nominate Tony. Top man, friendly and helpful above and beyond the call of duty  :)

The bloke in the Portugese deli once offered to go and get me some sesame seeds from his own house in his lunch-break and, so that I didn't have to carry it around all day, agreed to put some puff pastry (it's amazing what they sell in there if you ask for it) in the freezer for me until I returned in the evening. He put it in a bag marked... 'SOLD'.

you've gotto love the ritzy
the staff are lovely and mostly they are fit as well which helps
my favourite thing about the ritzy though is the graffiti in the ladies toilets it reads:
vive la revolution
vive la croissant
vive la maison :D

there is one row of seats in the screen upstairs that smells of wee though, not good

Totally agree.

I think Tony deserves an award for grace under pressure. Possibly one of the most on-top locations in London, with some of the most on-top customers, he manages to preserve a sense of grace and calmness that few of us could even begin to comprehend.

Not only that, but he stocks a decent range of beers too!

Hats off to a genuine trooper. Five Stars!!

seconded. top bloke, genuinely helpful

Not strictly Brixton, but the garage on Railton Rd near Herne Hill station is the absolute business. A lovely father and son team who won't rip you off and give a really good service. :)

Santaferno Colombian café in Brixton market, staff friendly and coffee cheap, opens at 8.00 AM so you can get one on your way to work. Not a great vegetarian selection though.

At weekends the two Colombian waiters at the other café in the market are always polite, friendly and helpful and the main woman chef has a lovely smile of recognition. They gave me a DVD of south American tunes for Xmas. But service is, hmmm, well they tend to focus on friendliness not speed.

Am I the only one who finds Khan's really average?

I know it's not Brixton, but The Chutney is the best takeaway place I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with.. super fast, super delicious, gorgeous, non-greasy curry, friendly staff, dirt cheap.

Go Chutney, go!

Nope, I don't think its that good either. We've started using Gousia on Norwood Rd, much better IMO.
