In all seriousness, don't forget the help they gave the robbery victim getting her bag back, spending ages rummaging through their rubbish to find all the bits and pieces ...

I vote for the guys in Nisa on Brixton Hill.
Always friendly and sometimes they even let me off with 10p or so if I don't have quite enough cash on me ...
So much better than their competitors nearby.

No argument about the weird one at the end of Blenheim Gardens but they're nice in Costcutter.

Another vote for NISA - they chased the guy who nicked my bike and I got it back!

Also, obviously, Khans - superbly friendly...

Yep - everyone at Khans is fab. They practically know our usual takeaway order off by heart :o and are always really chatty and friendly. They're ace.

A big vote for New Park Road Fruiterers. Lawrence is a absolute star, and his wife and son who all work there - all are super friendly, give regulars free and cheap stuff, and bend over backwards to help with things (eg. carrying xmas tree round to our house). Often spend a good half hour in there chatting about footie, politics, the state of the world etc. etc.

In fact all the shopkeepers on New Park Road are fab - all very friendly. I think it's cos they have lots of loyal regulars who really appreciate them.

I forgot to mention John the butcher - best butcher in south London, and all round top bloke.

A little shout for the folks at the Portuguese deli/cafe on Effra Road, by the Hobgob, too. Genuinely nice people who stock a small but excellent selection of Portuguese tinged foodstuffs and vegetables. Almost ridiculously cheap at times too - it's been a really convenient addition to the neighbourhood.

Honourable mention to the always happy senor in Inca Stores too. And the bloke in Granville Market who keeps an eye for the freshest green coconuts for me too..

You mean on Tulse Hill - that foreign country... ;) :D

They're the ones who come outside to look after my bike for me when I shop there. Consistently great veg. Fantastic pulses. Amazing tortilla. Great cheeses and v cheap sandwiches which they make up after you choose your own bread roll from the basket They were applying for a licence to open up an evening cafe and have an open air seating area out the back - but were under lots of pressure from the neighbouring kebab place.

That was me what got me stuff back :) :)

But remember - it wasn't KFC - it were the staff (bless 'em).

Can I nominate my dealer "K" who graciously accepted my returned deal of skunk due to it being of the grit weed type. Quite decent service for a street skunk sayer.:)

Stewart the watch mender / vendor in the market. Helpful and honest - tells you when all hope is lost, but takes a lot of trouble where there is any hope of repair. Knows a lot of stuff, too.

What do you have then?

Dominic in NISA and John in Costcutters are both sound guys.

The shop round the corner from Blenheim Gardens are twats

The shopkeeper's son just next door to the zora/bluestreak/boohoo residence is very friendly, always says hi and chats to me. Very friendly man :)

Poleo Dry Cleaners on Brixton Hill

Friendly bloke(s), decent service

And the bar staff at The Landor who went out to check for wrong 'uns when the missus was followed from the tube

:)

:o

Well between 2 of us it's usually chicken jalfrezi, veg tikka masala, sag panir (side) and tarka dall (side) and 1 pilau rice. And pops....

And that's enough to have a snack for 2 the next day...

That is my v fav combo at Khan's after about 6 years of trying all different combos!

I really do think Khan's is the best curry in the universe.

*makes note* Certainly closer than going into Brixton and atlantic road. Most crucially, do they have those delicious custard tarts?

Yup, I'll second that. The Nisa boys are great, always have the time to ask how you are, etc. Unlike the Costcutter where you hardly ever get a please or thank you. Rude fucks.

John was always polite enough

Agree wholeheartedly about Laurence and to a certain extent the chemist/healthfood store but definitely NOT the ones in the two "convenience" stores OR maybe, just maybe they've learned some manners since Tesco and Sainsburys opened in the area.

When I lived there (about a year ago) I always went to the conveninece store on the corner of Lyham/Dumbarton - a lot cheaper too.

wrong they just don't use the patter; a bit bored looking sometimes but never rude

Yeah, I just read your thread. I don't know what to say, maybe he just don't like me. Can't think why though, I live VERY close to the shop and was very helpfull when the shop was broken into last year.

Thinking about it though, John is polite, my gripe is with one of the girls who works there, from whom I have never had a please or thank you. Understand that I do not expect overwhelming gratitude for my custom, just a smile and a thank you.

I am miserable by nature, and I can manage it...........!!

Ah, sod the girls. He always had a range of young girls there for as long as I can remember. Not sure whether he gives school leavers part-time jobs and they stay on or what, but would agree with you that the girls all seem a bit young and stroppy and look like they don't want to really be there. :D Maybe they're just in shock at having to work :D Having said that, I rarely go in there anymore as Nisa is closer, although if I was still drinking in the White Horse then I would

I forgot to mention the chirpy pharmacist in New Park Pharmacy (at the South Circular end of New Park Road). He's lovely and always checks my prescriptions to see if there's a cheaper alternative available over the counter. He's always very happy and never fails to cheer me up.

Also, the guys in Mackays Hardware are fantastic. I'm crap at DIY but they never make me feel stupid. And they stock EVERYTHING - that shop is like a boomin' tardis!

Don't think anyone's mentioned the guy in the Chocolate Box who, despite working in the smallest shop ever, is still cheery and polite to a fault, always wishing you a good evening/day even if you've only bought a box of matches.

And the irish bloke who runs El Panzo at the Dogstar, always has time to chat about the food and gave us tasters of home made chilli sauces last time we were in there, even though we were being competitive and drunk, telling us about the origins of each one.

And an honourable mention to the Baron on Atlantic Road, went in there to look for a hat and got lots of help.

Big-up to Joseph and Carla at Elm Park post office. They're always smiling and never get rattled even when the list of 20 different transactions I need to make comes out. :)
