Brixton Fire (7 Oct)

Nobody been down to take pictures or anything? Curious that there's little mention of it anywhere in the media too.

is the shop that caught fire on the side of the road which is underneath the rail station - i.e. it's joined on to the granville arcade? if so, a little fire there could certainly help with the proposed redevelopment...

I'd have thought the travel disruption might have made it a bit more newsworthy. No matter.

Apparently so. It's currently out but not safe till they've sorted that I would think. The policeman certainly didn't think it was safe when I left the house at 9.30 this morning.

ETA - and in terms of the market stalls they would have had to make a call early on. The market traders generally arrive and start setting up from around 6am so it would seem logical at that stage that they closed the market for safety reasons.

So less of the facepalm please Jonti :)
Yes, and it was essential to close the Pope's Road Toilets as well as all the stalls there, and along Brixton Station Road. Everyone can see that

Anyway, fyi, street trading hours are 8am - 6pm (3pm on Wednesdays). Until the dot of 8am, traffic wardens can and will nick traders' vehicles "obstructing" the market streets.

I stand by my view that the closure of the whole of brixton street market on Wednesday seems to have been both unnecessary, and badly handled.

I accept that's not a big deal to you, I can see that.

I didn't say it's not a big deal and I'm sure I'd be pissed off if I were one of the traders. However, someone needed to make a call on it. As I said it's an issue re safety rightly or wrongly. I'd rather Lambeth made the call this way and got it wrong rather than doing it the other way round and possibly endanger people.

The traders vans being nicked before 8am I can well believe - the traffic wardens are fuckwits but they definitely start setting up beforehand.

I'm also well aware of the market trading hours as I've lived right by the market for the last 5 years ta :)

Anyway - glad it's all sorted now and no one got hurt.

Looks like that isn't gonna be reopening in a hurry...

Actually, when you consider the amount of flammable hydrocarbons that must have been stored in that place (plastic wigs + hair straighteners + vast amounts of 'real human hair' extensions + plenty gallons of peroxide-based dyes) it's a wonder it just sizzled merrily rather than going KABOOM.
