Brixton Cycles squatted YES

I see from another thread here, about licensing hours in brixton, that there may be a proposal to turn Brixton Cycles into a block of flats overshadowing Rushcroft Road! any truth in this? (as I don't fancy living in the shadow....)
Yes, there is. :) I am not sure what stage things are at. I think they may have actually got planning permission but I'm not sure.

You're right about the overlooking -- not good.

Well I'm definately going to give it a chance.
Me too. I'd rather have an open wanky art squat than a closed building (although I'd obviously prefer it be a proper inclusive arts space).

Is this Saturdays open day just 12 until 5 then?

We may not be able to make it by 5 (although we will be in the Albert later for vic and Kameron's dual birthday do).

I'd want to give it a chance too, I hope something good comes of it.

Funnily enough

One of the guys I was talking to there today was an Ex- Vickers shipbuilding apprentice made redundant some time ago about his love of the North Easts Engineering past

Apparently the building (squat) has a non smoking policy. So the party on Saturday will have a non smoking policy as well. Not a joke as long as I know. Came from the guy squated did it. I do hope it is a joke, but hey - doesnt this kinda shit get you into Guiness book of records? The first UK non-smoking squat this side of River Thames. Awesome. Pure class. See ya all on Sat....

The venue is an arts centre, which is open to the community to use.

The no smoking policy exists to engender and appropriate atmosphere and out of respect for the artists work.

How long we have is open to how well we manage the venue, and how much support we receive. The owner seems really nice. If we can impress him, reassure him, we stand a better chance of working with him to remain in the venue for a longer period of time.

The aim is to make as much of the venue as possible. Ideally we are looking at arts - peforming, musical, visual and interactive on the ground floor, a work space on the middle floor and residence on the top.

After just a week of being occupied, the venue is holding an open day tomorrow. 12 -8 PM.

Refused.

Everything they have asked for has been refused or withdrawn.

Though i heard they were appealing. The architects plans wereto retain the front of the building and extend the first and second floor out the back for flats. These would overlook Rushcroft Road-which I think must have been the problem with the application. The applicants were appealing against the planning departments opposition.

Twice as well...in the morning and in the afternoon too...it all seemed really relaxed though when I saw many old bill milling about by there yesterday afternoon. Whoever was playing sax upstairs shouldn't give up their day job though.

You'll be VERY surprised to know who that was... And he does have a day job as well....

Just dropped in there cos I saw it walking past (hadn't seen this thread). The people were friendly and a guy mentioned that they intend to have workshop space upstairs as well as the exhibition space. The artwork was variable in quality (as always) but there are some great photos in one exhibit - I almost asked for a print of the plastic bottle with leaves but decided I can't really spare the money :(

yeh, there's some nice stuff amongst the art there.. really liked the weird alien paintings (like the dosser drinking cocktails) - very lurid..

I think those were painted by Pete Dunn (I hope I’ve spelt his name correctly) and I also think they were really good, as you mention the captions do help in understanding the painting.

It was good to see some of the people I haven’t seen for a while

Good job I hope it works out for you:)

I was thinking while I was there how I’d use a space like that in Brixton so I started a thread about it.

What would you like to see this space used for, post your comments on the thread below, I know some of the people involved use this board so maybe you’ll give them some good ideas:)

Some good stuff in there. Nice one to everyone involved. We also saw Lee Scratch Perry walking down Coldharbour Lane while there. Which was nice.
