Brixton Climate Action Group(s)

duncanlaw

Transition Activist
I am setting up LAMBETH CLIMATE ACTION GROUP(s) on Wednesday 18 October, 7pm onwards, at Brixton St Vincent's Community Centre, in Talma Road, SW2

It will provide a focus for people who want to find out more about Climate Change and do something about it whilst building their local communities. A localised world is part of the solution so building local networks is moving towards it. It will devolve into more local groups (eg Brixton, Vauxhall, Streatham and even possibly for smaller neighbourhoods of a few streets.) with a strong focus on counting and cutting our carbon emissions. I will be setting up a voluntary carbon rationing group (www.carbonrationing.org.uk ) People with a special interest such as having a solar panel or working with the local council will be encouraged to form small support groups to pursue these interests. The groups will be small and decentralised but will have the opportunity to come together for information, news, skills and resource sharing at the monthly meeting. The new Green Councillor Becca Thackray has been very supportive. We hope to hold future meetings in the Town Hall. In the past Steve Reed, my local councillor and leader of the ruling Labour Group has also been supportive and has initiated a Sustainablility and Climate Change Commission within the Council.

Climate Change is a matter of survival of life on earth. We can still chose to have a future. But we must ACT NOW. We must reduce our emissions very radically, very soon or it will be too late. Runaway climate change is less than 10 years away.

Presently we are running blindfold towards the edge of a cliff. We must rip off our blindfolds, and exert all our effort and influence to make the turn. 'Enough and soon enough' must be our watchword. Going over the cliff at an angle is as fatal as going straight on. And we will get no second chances. I do not overstate the case.

We must snowball our influence. If 10 people galvanised 10 people each who in turn galvanised 10 people ... we'd soon reach the critical mass we need for change. We must start somewhere, soon.

Come and help form the LAMBETH CLIMATE ACTION GROUP(s)

Please send this round your local networks. I can send you an A4 poster in pdf format if you email me: [email protected]. Please volunteer to help.

Please see Al Gore's film AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH and read

See you in the future. IT IS NOT TOO LATE.... YET.

I am very interested in the idea of a localised climate action group.

Unfortunately at the moment I find it quite difficult to get out to early evening meetings, but I'd be very interested to hear more about how the meeting went, what was discussed, and what if any, action people expressed an interest in taking...

I'm not sure what I think about carbon rationing though, I feel it seems to give people an option of carrying on the same, and I can't see how that can be possible...
I'd be interested to know if the group focuses mainly on this area...

Lambeth Climate Action Groups 2nd meeting

The first meeting of LAMBETH CLIMATE ACTION GROUP(s) was very productive. Email Duncan at [email protected] for details.

The second meeting will be on Thursday 23 Nov at 7pm in Room 8, Lambeth Town Hall. Beforehand there will be a free screening of the excellent documentary THE POWER OF COMMUNITY: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil. at 6pm prompt.

Our Mission is to Reduce Carbon emissions, spread Localisation, spread the word and support each other.
5 Climate Action Groups have already formed:
Local Renewable Energy
Voluntary Carbon Rationing
Planning and Development
Screenings and Exhibitions
Education, Direct Action and Fundraising.
A volunteer wants to start a children's Climate Action Group.

We have had a useful meeting with the leader of the council Steve Reed and the environment policy advisor to look at how Climate Action can be supported locally and built into Council policy.

Please send this round your local networks. I can send you a poster/flier in pdf format if you email me: [email protected].

See you there, I hope

Lambeth Climate... now Transition Town Brixton

Lambeth Climate Action Group still exists but its main project is Transition Town Brixton see www.transitiontownbrixton.org.

It is a community led response to Climate Change, Peak Oil, (the beginning of the dwindling of the cheap energy resources upon which our economy and civilisation are base) and the Economic Crisis, to engage everyone in visioning and planning a BETTER low energy/carbon, localised future, to reskill and build community resilience.

Lots going on in about 6 different working groups. See website where you can click through to the groups' front pages and the interactive wiki pages where much of the work is done. Here are some of the Groups:
Food and Growing
Business and Economy including the Brixton Pound Group see www.brixtonpound.org
Remade in Brixton (waste as resource group) see www.remadeinbrixton.org
Transport
Buildings and Energy Group
Textiles and Clothing

TTB is launching the Brixton Pound on Thursday 17 September, a complementary local currency to encourage people to spend in independent local businesses and businesses to intertrade and source locally and to encourage discussion about money and localisation.

TTB is holding a Community Think-tank Day on how Brixton will feed itself after oil on 10.30-5pm on Saturday 10 October in the community centre, Loughborough Estate. Come and vision and plan an abundant well fed, low energy future for Brixton

Please have a look and get engaged in taking control of our future. There is a calendar of events and meetings on the website.
