brixton bad service and rip offs

I've actually had some friendly exchanges in there and conversations with staff and customers alike. Agree the veg are shocking though!

Yeah, and I once got in loads of trouble for getting their random weighing system wrong, felt like i was being sent back to school.

still end up going in there for the random hippy veggie food and. I try and get served by the younger man, occasionally he even smiles.

What about voting with your feet and not using the place if it's that bad?

I know it's not Brixton but there's a wholefood store in Camberwell...
It's easier said than done though, isn't it? A lot of shops get away with shit because their location (or opening hours, low prices, etc.) is convenient. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm way too lazy to go to Camberwell (is it the one with the yellow front btw?) to buy my alfalfa sprouts, I'd rather just put up with it and moan on the internet later I'm afraid :o
Although I'm moving to Streatham soon and have it on good authority there's a nice wholefood shop there.

I'm not totally sure :o

You know where the road splits and one goes to the common and the other goes off to Tooting? I think it's either on the left rd to the common OR its on the bit of road just before it divides.

I think.

Jesus I am shit at remembering where stuff is on that road - it's so long and samey :D

It's only just off the High Street, down the side of the police station. The link above has a map link.

Sorry, should read thread PROPERLY before posting. The info I've given is for wholefood cafe, not shop. There is a rubbish Holland and Barrett in Streatham too but I'd rather risk the slightly grumpy service in Brixton Wholefoods than go in there.

Lawrence the greengrocer on New Park Road has a decent selection of organic fruit and veg btw. He's happy to order in stuff on a one-off basis too. He's a diamond geezer :)

That's The Dip

Same as. I have to find out where things are in relation to the Cinema, Westbury's Chemist, WH Smiths, Argos, Boots and Superdrug, and the instructions have to be either before or after. There's no point telling me what shops are before or after 'cos I don't know :D

They're crap. You feel like you're inconveniencing them for daring to walk in

I believe you and am excited at the prospect of a new wholefood shop to visit :) once we work out where it is of course :p

Could you be meaning the one just before the corner of Prentis Road, all of about 100 yards into Streatham high rd on the St Leonard's Church side?

Opposite-ish MacShits?

Currys! But I don't think that's only Brixton
Blenheim Gardens PO  (actually caught the postman putting a "we tried to deliver a parcel" leaflet though my door last week with no parcel on him - went to BG and complained and everyone else in the queue had the same complaint!)

yes, blenheim gardens PO definitely deserves to feature on this thread.

I seem to remember they've had the honour of dedicated threads in the past, though.

this sounds good :)

It's definitely that end. Quite a small place but has a downstairs too.

Yep.
Little narrow long ground floor and a basement. Posters all the way down wall of the stairway.

Excuse my geographical ignorance, but is it quick/easy to walk to New Park Road from say, St Leonards Church? I think I remember Han saying he was very pleasant, what are his prices like? Does he sell stuff off cheap at the end of the day like the stallholders in Brikky do? And while I'm at it, from the same starting point do you reckon it would be better to go to Tooting or Brixton for my food shopping?

Well, it is quite a hike from the church to New Park Road. I reckon that, even if you're a fast walker, it will take you around 25 minutes. It's straightforward though; straight down the hill towards Brixton and then left on to New Park Road which is the turning after the Telegraph. Would take you 5 mins on a bus, 10 on a bike.

Lawrence is really lovely and his prices are reasonable, though not as cheap as the market. I've never seen him sell things off cheap - his brother runs the (excellent) Door Step cafe a few doors away and I reckon he probably uses up any leftovers.

I can't really answer the Tooting v.Brixton question. I get a Tesco delivery around once a month with heavy items like cat food, cat litter, tins, etc, and then I top up with items from local stores like Lawrence's. I don't do much food shopping in either Brixton or Tooting,

I'm sure you can get all you need in and around Streatham, there's plenty of decent fruit and veg shops on the High Road. Not sure about your end, but at mine, basically Streatham Hill, there's three or four good fruit and veg shops and a couple of decent delis.

The Turkish place at the end of my road (with the Orange awnings) is pretty good, and has a butchers and bakers attached next door. Their bread is really good, as are their turkish sweetmeats, but my favourite is their pitta bread - freshly baked every morning and only 20p a bag. Great stuff. Just past Streatham Hill station towards Streatham proper there is another couple of veg shops, and a good Polish deli that's been there for years.

Oh, and while I remember, there's a really good french deli hidden away at the bottom end of Sunnyhill Road - no idea how it survives, but they do great bread, olives and fantastic duck pate. And pop into the Leigham Arms for a pint on your way back. The ONLY decent pub in Streatham.

the meditteranean deli is great - (the Turkish place Dogmatique is talking about) and a fucking Sainsbury's has opened next door to it! Happily, the Med place is easily still the better shop - I just hope that the Sainsbury's doesn't mean they lose business.
