Brixton Art Gallery forced out of Business?

salama bob, niliona tag yako - eko poa! :)
sijui luga kwa namibia - ivio mbale mahali kisawahili, lakini u75 forum kingereza basi, ile mzee amesema kwa lazima tutatabu queens inglish & my swahili's crap anyway!

a) Thanks - he's my hero.

b) I'd forgotten how bloody difficult it is when you've forgotten most of your vocabulary and got rusty on the prefixes. So I got about 2/3 of that! :o

c) Oshindonga is one of the bigggest Oshiwambo dialects - basically pretty similar to Swahili but most of the prefixes that would start with 'm' start with 'o' instead.. the changes are fairly standard so it's not that difficult to switch in theory.

d) English needs an equivalent of mzee... I'd love to be able to go to my granny and say shikamoo.

e) pole pole ndiyo mwendo - the only phrase I can remember. :)

Anyone know any Ki-Kamba?

Nope. But I've hitched through the area and read the fine book 'More People, Less Erosion: Environmental Recovery in Kenya' by Mary Tiffen, Michael Mortimore and Francis Gichuku - which is about a Kamba area.... :)

My ex lived in that region. He had a Shamba there and his children are still there (he's dead now). I can't speak any Ki-Kamba but they are learning English. I can say yoghurt in Ki-Swahili though....

editor - sorry i was narked my thread got ignored except by tricky to spam his own project - that's the conexion..... is that ok?

WHAT?

What fucking project? I am in no way connected with BAC and have never stated that. I'm just an interested observer.

And what's with this spam shit? After your original posting, I wanted to clarify that the closure is not at all connected with BAC, despite your lame attempts to make a connection.

I was surprised there was fuck all protest or recognition round these urban parts when Jacaranda was closed down! how frightful! its got a crack in the glass! How terrible! Can't frequent such a dreadfully poor establishment.

<edited, except to say that I don't think chegri has done himelf ANY favours in this thread. Sorry chegs, but it's what I think ... I was far more critical of you before I edited it, but the thread has started to move on ... >

in which case?

I emailed my ex-landlady about this and got a reply including the phrase:

they’re going to end up with a boring collection of bars and clubs at this rate.

Ah, I rather think that may conceivably be the idea ....

William - I don't post to do myself favours, just to state my honest opinion about things as I see them......

:)

I fear for that while stretch to be honest - ever since the market shrunk to a pale shadow of its former self, there's a lot less people about.

I get the impression it's started to perk up a little on that stretch in the last few months.

The street market is still barely non-existent along Brixton Station Rd.

It used to extend all the way up to Valentia Place - now there's no more than two or three stalls along the whole stretch.

Have you been up there recently? I'm sure that when I was up there last weekend there were some new stalls so it was expanding a bit.

Just about every day and it's nothing like it used to be! Can you not remember when the stalls went right up to Valentia Place?

Nope! But I'm a fairly recent arrival to Brixton... My point was though that maybe it had started to turn a corner recently.

I think a few of the newer stallholders at East Street at the weekends, may be ex Brixton. I wonder if the pitch fees are cheaper in Walworth, or maybe it's just that more people come specifically to East Street to go marketing, at weekends. You see them piling off the buses and heading straight into 'The Lane', which gets VERY crowded from about ten o clock to one o clock both Saturdays and Sundays.

bump

I just edited my first post to add a statement from the gallery i just received by email,
hope that clarifies things...

(tricky - calm down! :) )

Well I just took a walk down that way and almost every shop has a large notice in the window saying how Lambeth council are trying to drive them out of business, so that they can redevelop the area.
Looks like decisions have already been made, and we must say goodbye to our sportcentre, :( along with quite a few small businesses.

Meeting

the folk from the gallery are trying to organise a meeting with a councillor tomorrow - 26th October 5.30PM on Brixton Station Road in one of the businesses affected.

I'll post up more details if i receive any, but i'll probly pass by that way & see if i can stick my nose in.... i'm sure any support will be welcomed.
