Britons 'sleep in dirty duvets'

Christ; and here I thought I was a pig...

We change the sheets and pillowcases every week. The duvet/comforter is washed 4 times a year, maybe more. Sometimes, we'll just throw it in the dryer for a spin, to freshen it up a bit.

We've done this with both synthetic comforters and down duvets. The down will stand up just fine to washing; just think, it used to get wet when it was still on the duck or goose with no ill effect.

Eventually, though, after a number of years, it will start to lose feathers. When it loses quite a few feathers, it's time to get a new duvet.

You should never get a duvet dry cleaned, the fumes from that can kill you, least that's what they told me when I took mine in to get cleaned. I'd hope they're just washing it for you.
I take to the dry-cleaner and they clean it for me.

I've got know real idea what goes on behind the scenes with my duvet. :o

Because whilst it's on a duck they lubricate it with fluid from an oil gland.

Always cleaned my duvets at least twice a year at the launderette, and occasionally in the bath as well if a new kitten arrives and can't remember where the loo is! Takes an age to dry if home washed tho, so generally take a trip to launderette if I can. They just don't fit in home washers/dryers!

i can't believe some of you people and your obsession with cleanliness.

you can't trust clean people.

still, they're making themselves unable to resist germs and bugs and so they'll all die off soon.

the mucky will inherit the earth!

This thread has caused me much soul-searching :(

I need a new duvet – and fast. Is the John Lewis sale still on? :(

Twice a week!!!!
We change our sheets once a week, more if sex is particularly messy. ;)

The number of English girls I’ve lived with that never seemed to change their bed linen really surprised me.

Changing the sheets once a week is not an obsession with cleanliness.

I refuse to wash mine too regularly on the grounds of it being environmentally friendly to be dirty :)

Think of all the water, detergent and electricity that you lot are using. Global warming is obviously down to your superclean beds

but not your actual duvet, right?

i have once washed a duvet. I had been stored in my mum's garage while i was between houses and it smelled damp - otherwise i wouldn't bother.

You have to go to the launderette where they have those special machjines, and it costs a fair bit. some duvets need dry cleaning - and that's even pricier. sod that for a game of soldiers. Bring on the dust mites.

Cheaper to just buy a new one

Maybe David Cameron should come out and say, 'as well as my windmill and solar panel and cycling, my bed fucking stinks and is all crusty - Vote for me'

I can't ever remember cleaning my duvet....... can you do it in the washing machine or does it have to be dry cleaned?

You can dry clean duvets but you can wash them too. You have to go to a lauderette as the average doemstic washing machine isn't big enough to cope with a duvet.
