Ok, I think I see. Do you mean that because loudness doesn't scale with intensity, using loudness as a measure will not be a good indicator of a damaging level? If so, yes, that is true.

Outdoor events are a pain in the arse from an engineering pov nowadays, and the biggest concern isn't usually the hearing of the punters, it's the complaints from local residents.

I've just started a petition about this at http://www.ravetalk.co.uk/soundpetition/ and hope it starts a debate about why the views of one or two moaning old gits count for more than 100,000 festivalgoers who've been working all year round to enjoy that one weekend where they can let their hair down a bit.
