Brighton - somewhere nice to eat

The Shakespeare's Head pub's usually quite good & a popular place as well (Spring Street off Western Road - North Side)

The Lebanese place on Western Rd is Kambis - and it was certainly still going strong last summer when I was last there. They have a website http://www.kambis.co.uk - which is a bit dull and doesn't really do them justice. Plus points - really good vegetarian food (and even vegan) + meat for those who want it. Also it's byo, and there's a mighty Waitrose just over the road and along a bit so you can go and spend a tenner on wine and get something really quite good. Chunky Spanish reds seem to go well with Lebanese food.

That's the one! I'd forgotten the name.

And just down from Western Rd, on the way to the sea is the rather sweet Robin Hood pub. Nothing to go crazy over but homely and friendly and the antithesis of Brighton cool bar McPub-type places. They had a smokers sofa outside on the pavement last time I was there which was pretty comfortable I thought. All profits go to charity! (hence the name), little bit more about it here:

Robin hood's my local, they give all the profits away to charity too, which is always a good excuse to have another pint!

so do I, but it's actually on the corner of regency sq.

the food is good, but it's not somewhere I'd describe as a "nice" restaurant though.

yeah, hence the name :D and no - it's not somewhere for a nice evening out or something. it's a fill-up-and-go type place.

We had a great time at Riddle and Finns Champagne and Oyster Bar (Meeting House Lane) on our honeymoon last summer.

The waiter seriously came on to my new husband :D but the Oysters were lovely :)

Okie - I get confused over Brunswick & Regency squares :) DOH @ me...
But all in all - I still think Bankers is the best one :D

while i'm here, did anyone hear those ads on southern fm, "love's fish resturant, as seen on Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares"

Yep. I found them quite disturbing actually - the sound of a man having a nervous breakdown imo. Don't think LFR has much time left to be honest...

Anyway, decent Brighton restaurants. There are fewer than you think, but there are some decent ones out there.

Top end - Terre a terre (still great), Sams of Brighton (where 1 Paston Place used to be). Gingerman (Norfolk Sq) and Gingerman at Drakes, Seven Dials restaurant, Pinxto People, La Fourchette. Honourable mentions to Riddle and Finns, Real Eating Co.
Good mid-range gastropubs - The Ginger Pig, Preston Park Tavern, The Wellington, The Forager, Chimney House, Grays (The George is fairly average now imo).
Nice pubs that do food near the seafront - Robin Hood, Lion and Lobster, Basketmakers, Coopers Cask, Jugglers, Star and Sailor, a load of others that have slipped my mind...

I nearly forgot, I really like Due South (although I went off it a little bit when I read it was Zoe Ball's favourite restaurant) - it's got a great view and the chef used to work at Terre a Terre - but they do meat as well as veggie stuff.

Oh and Prompt Corner (on Montpelier Road) always used to be recommended by folks... No idea what it's like these days though.... and by the way, Kambi's was doing good business tonight when I walked past :)

Sorry there , only just saw your post - yep... If you face up Montpelier Road with Waitrose on your right it's on the other side of Montpelier Rd, about 10 or 20 yards up from Western Road

Ta for the recommendations, we ended up in the Basketmakers Arms for a few drinks, so ate in there too - lovely home made grub :)

The Chip Shop on the pier, best one in Brighton IMHO.

..

It really isn't. There is one along the front near the Regency Square. I think it is called the Regency:confused:. There is another further along that is ok.

Most of the chip shops in Brighton are shit these days.

I got a crispy maggot in my chips on the one on the pier once. Sure, they do champagne with your chips, peas and battered cod if you want, but it really is not one I would recommend. You can get cheaper and better quality.

There's a quite good Italian in the same square as the Druid's Head.

Just down hill is the Sussex which, in the summer, has opera singers in the pub garden.

bit of an old bump, but can anyone recommend somewhere decent for a large family group? about 6 adults and 5 kids aged between 18 months and 10.

it's last minute (for tomorrow) - are we stuck with Pizza Express type places? I seem to remember going to a half decent independent Italian on the edge of the Laines once, anyone know what it would be called? Was close to the warren of really narrow streets.

kthx
