Has anyone mentioned the Great Eastern?

Little pub with dusty books all along the walls at the bottom of Trafalgar Street (same road as the Prince Albert but at the bottom of the hill) - really nice for a quieter drink. Almost opposite that is a pub called the George which does totally veggie (and rather nice) food. Those are usually my two haunts when I go down there.

In re: to cafes, the North Lanes underwent a bit of an explosion of organic cafes a few years back. However, if you find that sort of thing a bit pretentious there's a great (and busy) little cafe called Kensingtons on a little street called Kensington Gardens. I think from Trafalgar street you walk almost to the bottom of the hill and right along Sydney Street, and then when you get to the end of that it's the road continuing opposite, a wee bit to the right. If there's room you can sit on the roof terrace and watch all the people wander around below. Note, there are two places with roof terraces on this street, and you want the one at the far end of the road (if you're following those directions) rather than the one nearest you.

That cafe with the roof terrace that overlooks Infinity Foods yes?
It is indeed nice - I go there from time to time with me bezzer after a swim for a plate of beans on toast. :)
I should remember what it's called.......but I don't.... :p

I know Tanky and milesy are leaving the girl behind - what with it actually being a mid-week nooky trip....the dirty bastards  - but for future reference, The George and The Open House both let kids in too (well till banning hour - 7pm iirc - anyway).

Which is nice. :D

This pub is my friend's local (when she's visiting her folks that is).

She said it's quite studenty, though I've never seen any signs of that.

It is a bit.
And a bit meejah.
And a bit Brighton Parent too.

And then there's me................<Mystery Guest>collapsed in the corner in me piss sodden kaftan</Mystery Guest> :(

Nah......y'know...EVERYWHERE in Brighton is a bit studenty tbf. ;)

And to it's credit - I've actually seen the odd OLD PERSON at this pub too! :D

Yup, that's the one. I think it's called Kensingtons but I'm a little uncertain.

I used to work there for a couple of months after finishing uni. If the owners are the same since then, then it's fantastic food, but if you complain about a small thing or in a cheeky way then the owners are a bit on the scary side! :D

Btw, open house, I definitely get the meejah thing more than the student thing. Mind you, thinking about it the main times I've been there has been round Xmas time when all the students are at home, or in the summer when most of them are at home. Silly me for just thinking of that now

It's one of the expanding chain of zel pubs, isn't it?

God Almighty.
You're so predictable milesy.
I almost wrote it into my last post for you, to save you the trouble.
But I just couldn't be fucked.

(((((((((( Tanky :( )))))))))))

Sigh - that was the Prince George, the best pub in Brighton until the owners got fed up with a growing smack problem and sold up. The new owners turning it into the veggie ponceria it is now :(

Ms Idaho was always a Great Eastern drinker and I was always over the road in the George. We could sort of go out together, and drink in different pubs :D

the North Lanes

 And you grew up in Brighton!

well you can hardly expect me to be bothered to make an effort just for your fucking benefit. i've got better things to do, like unpick my tagnuts.

I know it was right at the beginning of the thread but the Funky Buddha lounge was a great venue but I haven't been to brighton for 5 years so don't rely on my memory.
The Ocean Rooms are good too and if you fancy a bit of cheese then the Zap Club and The Beach do cheap nights during the week.

Zeppo- I'm going to the PCS conference too. I'm so excited, I've only been back to Brighton once since I left uni, I can't wait.

Anyone else for the conference?

Sorry for the derail tanky and milesy.:o

Well, when you are veggie (or pescetarian), you're more just overwhelmed by the fact there's an entire fairly reasonably priced menu from which you can chose from with various things you'd actually consider eating, than to notice how it is a leedle poncy. ;)

Aw :)

 And you grew up in Brighton!
Look, I am a really unobservant person which leads to various misspellings, OK? :o

Tbh, the one thing I don't like about Brighton is I can't think of any clubs/after hours bars which I actually like. They all seem to range from the poncy to the cheesy to the hard clubby, with a few quieter "meh" places in between. And the Concorde Two makes me feel claustrophobic for some reason.

However, as a few years ago this led to me not even trying, I might not be totally up to date on this.

You might catch the end of Brighton festival - http://www.brightonfestival.org/

or the Fringe festival - http://www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk/

http://www.concorde2.co.uk/ - Concorde 2, usually good for music.

http://www.picturehouses.org.uk/static/newsletter/latest/doyb.html - Duke Of York's if it's raining and you fancy watching a film of a less mainstream type. (Try Bad Film Club - a bad film with a comedien on stage taking the piss out of it while you watch)

http://www.komedia.co.uk/ - Comedy & theatre

Pub with the best view in Brighton - The Setting Sun

http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/14/14929/Setting_Sun/Brighton

Isn't the festival over on (about) the 25th of may?

Oh yeah the setting sun, is Mike still the landlord? if so then deffinitely a recomendation I should have made

the komedia is rubbish for comedy... I hate it... its a comedy venue that doesn't allow heckleing.... if you like neutered stand up then go.... however I did see the mighty She Said down there and that was good, so gigs there can be good

no worries ms tanky. brighton used to be my second home and when i went back there for a visit last summer i was very depressed to find that a lot of my old haunts had closed, so i cannae give you teh lowdown you deserve, but it has a great scene. in most pubs you'll find dozens of flyers and magz detailing the city's activities and there is pretty much somethign for everyone there.

yeah its undergoing an 'east croydening', too expensive really to live and work in brighton now, its a sad fate for such a once great place...

The Hobgoblin on the London Road, near Sainsbury's and Grubbs (where everybody should have at least one burger in their life) also puts on bands some nights. I saw Peter and the Test Tube Babies there for free a couple of years ago, and a whole day long thing of up and coming punk bands.

Heh... Spent two and a half years working there part time when it was called The Northern... band scene was good.... Memories....

Saw Captain Sensible there a couple of months ago

As mentioned, music at The Albert (Trafalgar Street) just adj to the station
Bankers on Western Road for fish & chips or Bardsleys in Baker Street just along from what was the London Road Co-Op

Good pub along there as well, though the name escapes me at the moment

I always preferred the Uncle Sams veggie sandwich - but I was a veggie back then. Knew a few folks who worked in Grubbs (when it was at the old location) and the hygene standards were a bit dodgy.

I used to work at the 7-11 that was on York Place - before that whole run of shops died. Used to be a lively little row.
I worked at The Northern :)

I never drank in the Northern when it was the Northern. I think it changed to the Hobgoblin in about.. hmmm.. 1990?

York Place had about 5 takeaways, the 7-11, a couple of sit in restaraunts, the off licence - as well as a half dozen shops that were open in the day. There was quite an atmosphere there of an evening. It's almost completely derelict now.

well after all that i think the only place we went to that any of you lot suggested was the heart in hand for a quick pint :o the cocktails in the hotel bar were too nice for us to bother with elsewhere for drinking really :D (but cheers to all of you anyway!)

but yeah, we had a great time. lovely hotel, lovely friendly staff and a room that was just lovely to spend a lot of time lovely in ;) but we did do a fair bit of exploring of the laines and other shops, and of the sea front too. an ace few days :)
