Grubbs burgers are the bollocks!
I always preferred the Uncle Sams veggie sandwich - but I was a veggie back then. Knew a few folks who worked in Grubbs (when it was at the old location) and the hygene standards were a bit dodgy.

I used to work at the 7-11 that was on York Place - before that whole run of shops died. Used to be a lively little row.

Sparklefish, sparklefish. Come quick! Tankys off to Brighton when you are!!!

Come read her thread about where to go!

well i have been to brighton twice this year.

first time me and cheg went to this lush "boutique" hotel, which was amazing, and we didnt venture out too much! ;) ;) :p (fnarrr all of that rubbish - there was a jacuzzi in the room - it was much fun)

anyway, the second time i went was on a hen do a few weeks back and it was horrid - loads of bars, booze and general mayhem.

my point is, chose your venue wisely - i have been to brighton loads and it can be quite hit and miss cos so many people pitch up there... anyways, i'm sure you and teh milesy will have fun cos yr doing yr research innit!

didn't she spend most of her time there in casualty?

i just to spend about 8-10 weekends every summer down there but it was a few years ago. There's a lovely pub just on Seven Dials, can't remember the name of that. And a great pub just round the corner from the end of the Laines. Can't remember the name of that either.

Try not to end up at the Catfish Club on Friday night. You probably will anyway, but try not to.

I always found Brighton better for random house parties than clubs anyway - the clubs were always oversubscribed, overpriced and finished too early

the catfish used to be good, before they got rid of the original deejay who created the night, and ran it for about a decade... now its like a wedding reception gone bad... (well ok the last time I went there in '03)

Full Moon? Shakespeares Head?

You are getting your Lanes and your North Laine mixed up I think.

I can't believe the Catfish Club is still going. Used to go to that way back when. They played blues and stuff way back when.

No the confusion seems to be that The Lanes are plural whereas North Laines is not a plural. As in the area is North Laines rather than being the North Laines.

Not that it actually matters, but while I'm being pedantic I may as well go the whole hog.

the albert is a lovely pub, one of my favourites in brighton. i reckon you guys will love it.

i thought they were all Laines, hence the spelling confusion people have..

nope. the lanes are the small maze of paths towards the seafront, whereas the north laines is an area north of that - i believe a laine is an old sussex word for fisherman's cottage or something IIRC.

no worries ms tanky. brighton used to be my second home and when i went back there for a visit last summer i was very depressed to find that a lot of my old haunts had closed, so i cannae give you teh lowdown you deserve, but it has a great scene. in most pubs you'll find dozens of flyers and magz detailing the city's activities and there is pretty much somethign for everyone there.

I thought you were a polite, kindly type! :(
Well I shan't be offering you friendly advice anymore!

I might go to Glasgow myself, mind you!

When did you say you were coming again? :)

You might catch the end of Brighton festival - http://www.brightonfestival.org/

or the Fringe festival - http://www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk/

http://www.concorde2.co.uk/ - Concorde 2, usually good for music.

http://www.picturehouses.org.uk/static/newsletter/latest/doyb.html - Duke Of York's if it's raining and you fancy watching a film of a less mainstream type. (Try Bad Film Club - a bad film with a comedien on stage taking the piss out of it while you watch)

http://www.komedia.co.uk/ - Comedy & theatre

Pub with the best view in Brighton - The Setting Sun

did you make that crap, erm..."obelisk" in the beer garden? looks the sort of shit you might turn your hippy hands too :)

Has anyone mentioned the Great Eastern?

Little pub with dusty books all along the walls at the bottom of Trafalgar Street (same road as the Prince Albert but at the bottom of the hill) - really nice for a quieter drink. Almost opposite that is a pub called the George which does totally veggie (and rather nice) food. Those are usually my two haunts when I go down there.

In re: to cafes, the North Lanes underwent a bit of an explosion of organic cafes a few years back. However, if you find that sort of thing a bit pretentious there's a great (and busy) little cafe called Kensingtons on a little street called Kensington Gardens. I think from Trafalgar street you walk almost to the bottom of the hill and right along Sydney Street, and then when you get to the end of that it's the road continuing opposite, a wee bit to the right. If there's room you can sit on the roof terrace and watch all the people wander around below. Note, there are two places with roof terraces on this street, and you want the one at the far end of the road (if you're following those directions) rather than the one nearest you.

Kensingtons is next to a shop called Pussy which is overpriced but usually worth a peek if you like kitsch stuff at all. And there are a fair few kitsch shops in the North Lanes.
