brighton - recommend me some bars/pubs/whatevers!

Tank Girl

........
me and the husband are off to brighton at the end of the month for a mid-week break (cheaper innit :D )

the daytimes are pretty much sorted for shopping, sitting on the beach, eating chips on the pier, but I'd like some recommendations for places to eat and drink in the evenings.

we're staying at the hotel pelirocco, which apparently has a good bar, but we want to venture out of the hotel at some point. the hotel is in regency square, so I'm thinking places along the seafront might be a good bet.

don't really fancy old man type boozers (we'll go to them during the day :D ), but also don't fancy anything poncey either. quirky would be good, sleazy would be good. cheesy wouldn't.

el mexicano restaurant looks like it might be good, anyone been?

also, does anyone know where to look for small gigs that might be happening? the only gig I can find online is simon webbe, and that's no good now is it?

Brighton is like my second home, i been to tons of places, but cant remember any bloody names, itys that bloody brilliant:D ....im a great help innit....BUT it is an amazing place!!!

buddha...something , by the lagoon near the beach front rings a bell:D

Just about my favourite restaurant in the entire universe is Terre a Terre in Brighton. It's ace!

lol haylz, should I need a comfy seat I'll know where to go :D

I remember you telling me about that restaurant editor, so I have already looked that one up - but I didn't understand what much of the food was ;)

That's part of the fun. But the food is always lush.

On a sunday i always have a ...shwarmie* (sp*) meat kebab from.......wait for it a lebaneese type takeaway that is on the main rd out of Brighton center to Hove, not far from george st , but a bit further back by the houses that look like they come from oliver twist era.......:D

im sure you will have no probs finding it:D

Right........as you come out of the train station, go to your right, cross the road opposite a very steep hill that at the bottom on the corner houses an amazing cafe that do pukker vegi brekki...half way up that hill is a funky lill pub type lounge place...not wanky, quite chilled.....

The hill is sooooo steep, how they park cars up it ill never know..

nice one, we're sorted for brekkie at the hotel, but if I can make it up the steep hill I'll try and find the little pub :)

thanks :)

If you're around on Sunday, everyone around these parts raves on about the Jamaica Inn. OK, so they're slightly biased - there's an exodus from here to there every w/e - but there's apparently a massive, perfect roast on offer for a fiver.

And a quality reggae selection from some old faces and a relaxed atmosphere by all accounts. Could be worth a visit.

:)

Its on western road, past the waitrose, technically its in hove (as that road to the west of waitrose is the brighton/hove border.

I'd go to the evening star (just by the station) as its one of the few independant pubs left in brighton. They brew their own beer, and their corriander beer is ace. The other pub I'd recomend is the Heart in Hand in the north lanes, its traditonally the band scene pub, has an ace fat dog, and wicked jukebox.

There is a very nice and quite cheap thai place on boyces place (just off middle street).

I'll second that!

The Lion and Lobster on the Hove/Brighton border is nice and I seem to recall the toilets are pretty cool. Me and Flashy scored a free serving of fish and chips there one snowy January day cos we were hiding round in the restauranty bit and they forgot about us. I don't know if they still do the "Homemade cider. 2 pints maximum - no arguments" on the bar though :D

well my at least my 13 years in brighton weren't entirely wasted... ;)

eta the free butt and the albert will probably have some local bands playing above them/in the back/etc.. might be worth checking out as brighton's band scene allways puts out good bands who never make it out of the town, erm, city

Free Butt, Heart in Hand, Prince Albert... heheheh.. it's like a snapshot of my life 15-20 years ago :D

And Montpelier Road is not the Brighton-Hove border - that's Norfolk Square a block or so further on.

RIP the Prince George - once the finest pub in the universe, now just a crap vegetarian ponceria.

The Hobgoblin on the London Road, near Sainsbury's and Grubbs (where everybody should have at least one burger in their life) also puts on bands some nights. I saw Peter and the Test Tube Babies there for free a couple of years ago, and a whole day long thing of up and coming punk bands.

I haven't lived in Brighton in over 15 years so I don't know of whom you speak.

I partake of a triple veggie Hawaiian every time I visit Brighton. It's a bit of a tradition for me. :o
