Some pretty weird judgements on this thread. Haws is a bloke who seems to have been totally fucked up/over by society/his life - delete as appropriate. His response to all that has been to escape from everything and end up in an obsessive protest. By the by, that has annoyed the government and given the anti-war movement a bit of publicity. He could equally have ended up a smackhead who nobody would be even discussing - but through random cause and effect he's ended up in Paraliament Square. That we should be judging him by some abstract 'activist ideal' is, as i say, pretty odd.
Its not about any kind of 'activist ideal' at all. Its about Haw being irrelevant and doing, IMO, more harm than good. Stuff like this seems to exist purely to create as much noise as possible without any attempt at coherent ideas, it is a waste of energy, a pointless diversion and it turns political protest into a freak show for attention seeking egoists.

How is it wasting your energy? You've still not shown how Haw does 'more harm than good', apart from the fact that he gives interviews while people are being arrested.

Your comments about Haw are also a waste of energy, no?

Yeah, but if I wasn't here, I'd be revising.

Forgetting about the actual man himself, you must admit that you cant help but be moved by the material he has on display, most of which he didnt create himself and has come from peace activists around the world, and the fact that he has it on display RIGHT opposite where those cunts go to work, in the face of vicious police is the main achievement to focus on when evaluating Brian Haw, if you just focus on his personality youre bound to think its a waste of time because he is a bit of a wanker at the best of times

is that the guy who left his wife and kids to go be a moralising cock outside parliament?

my mate met him and said he is a complete cock, really fucking up himself.

I reckon he's a cunt and should be sectioned before he not only harms himself (which i couldn't realy care about) but makes a further tit out of the anti war movement.

Oh dear i feel that if there is a "cock" any where its you son..
Are you the dick that said he was shot out of his house be the UVF and then went to live in Larne...
And as for making up your mind about another individual ( with out having even meet them) and all via your famous "mate" ...Well thats says so much more about you as an idiot and a person than any critism i could proffer....what a fucking tool...

well, actually I was shot out of my house by loyalists of unknown grouping for unknown reasons (I doubt they could no for certain i was a taig), and i'm currently living in larne until my mate gets back from Mexico City and we get a house together. Where I suggested it was the UVF or anyother particular group is beyond me.

Guess what, Larne isn't the Warsaw Ghetto and I don't live in constant fear of loyalist attack, infact i never go out in Larne I just stay there during the week and go out in Belfast at the weekend. Anymore personal info you need, dipshit?

As for the guy being a cock, well I heard it from a friend I trust on such matters who said he was an ignorant cock who started being arsey towards him and ranting about all these people who say they are against the war but go on with their lives.

don't worry Monte once you've got your Organisers job for the Unions i'm sure Ken Loach will knock out a film about you. It sure will be gripping the story of one mans journey from substitutionist activist to mediating union baron, from ket and cider to beer and sandwhiches.

Divided, ruled

What this thread shows to me is the prevalent attitude of 'what's the point?'

After the fireworks of the biggest anti-war march in London - which showed our right to be listened to, so long as we are not listened to - it seems to have been a steady progression for so many people into the activist's inferno: those circles of hell where we question our own sanity, our own actions, our own beliefs, our own principles, our own needs, our own existences to the point where we would rather carp at other people for saying that war in general or a particular war are wrong, instead of finding pathways of affirmation of peace ourselves.

I cannot go along with somebody who questions how Brian Haw makes 'the peace movement look'. At least he makes it look like something, rather than nothing. I would rather it looked like a giant panda on a unicycle wearing jodphurs with 'LUNAR TIC' scrawled on in lipgloss rather than nothing at all.

The voices of those who believe in peace and the need for it to be carefully arranged by skilled dialogue are being intimidated out of existence.

Being steadfast in the face of propaganda, accelerating armament, and dividing global factions makes you look like a complete lunatic.

So what? Looking in the mirror all the time is a desert.

In that desert is SOCPA, KRATOS, ASBOs - a creeping authoritarianism, and with it a creeping technical jargon, and with it increasing resignation and despair.

Quick - denounce the People's Liberation Front of Judaea! Their methods are those of bourgeois reactionaries and rootless cosmopolitans! Haw's head for the stake! Etcetera etcetera blah blah boring boring boring

Another fine mess we've got ourselves in

He may be a bit of a nutter, but he is also the only person holding onto the right to protest outside Parliament (even though the government scripted an entire piece of legislation to get rid of him). Surely that's worth something?

That might help!

What is aloe-vera exactly? Is it real or marketing wank? I seem to remember doing about eleven seconds of cyberweb resplurge on it when I should probably have been making some small pittance of money and finding out it was a real plant with genuine medicinal qualities. I might research it again. And then put in on my face, and then maybe hang out more in front of mirrors. I try not to look in them at all at the moment. It's not a pleasant experience. Hopefully the allo-vera will help to clear up those bags the size of beijing under the eyes and the general 'i'm tired, it's too cold and dark to do this everyday' hangdog look, and the stringy beard that says 'please don't come near, and for the love of drogba don't you dare think about pulling me' in the manner of the shameless citizen smith activist who spends more time ranting into the armpits of his bedroom walls than getting on and changing the world. which is what he wants to do, desperately all too desperately, but doesn't know how, and needs friends to help, and some advice, and some damn good ideas, and above all else an injection of enthusiasm into a non-fossil fueltank which is running on empty in the wake of a long slog in 2005 and a really fantastic new year's eve at jamm in brixton which was the first time i'd been there and i was not disappointed. all that in a stringy pisspoor excuse for a beard. truly the picture of a face tells a thousand words. or something. i'm tired. i'm off to bed. ignore all of this. i approve of brian haw and yes he's a bit nutty. when i met him briefly to chivvy him along and say i was behind him he gave me the kind of shrug-off i normally only get from girls in bars. to be honest the guy who said he's fucking himself up is probably right. particularly if he's left wife and kids and so on. he struck me as quite depressed. depressed to be part of a country that couldn't stop the invasion of iraq. he's obsessive and compulsive, yes. his methods are probably not going to end human wars forevermore amen. yet, he's having a go, and he cares about this stuff for real - i'm sure of that - and so he gets my vote. he's not at all media savvy, so he gets my vote twice.

time for the night nurse. she's a wonderful lady. a tiring week.

That`s perfectly fine revol68 that you "trust" your mate on such matters..But peeps here don`t know your mate and might be so inclined to either agree or indeed dis-agree with him. But you do leave yourself open to critism with such a remark..Do you not?

for someone on here to criticise someone just because they deem them to have shite politics seems laughable to me

leave the guy alone, what fucking harm is he doing you? better to make a stand about something, even if its not the type of stand you think is worthwhile or important, than to sit at a computer and slag someone off...

imho of course

Would you rather nobody criticised anybody's pollitics ever?

I'm quite capable of multitasking, I'll have you know :p

However flawed he may be as a person, his stand is symbolic. He's become a David and Goliath figure. They even passed a bill to try and get rid of him

It doesn't really matter who he is or what he's like. It matters that somebody is in that spot protesting, especially now.
