I don't know why I said it was crap, I like it really.

They had to cut a lot of the books anti-religious feel in order to secure funding. I suspect.

Oh, and in reference to astronauts 'going a bit funny'. I remember one Apollo astronaut did, can't remember who.

Thing is, they aren't trained to be the most reflective of people. More to carry out complex instructions under stress. It wouldn't surprise me if some didn't go a bit 'what's it all about eh?' until they had time to think it over a while.
