Your posts do read as though you thought Johnny was responsible for bringing race into it and I suppose you're right in that the person who made the rather weird joke about lynching may not have had Johnny's race in mind at all, however I do think it it perfectly understandable why Johnny should have reacted to it. Given that, you did seem to dismiss it. Johnny's response to you then demonstrated rather well that offensive joke is offensive in the context.
Not to derail this thread further (but I will) ... 4thwrite was being critical of the "lynch mob", DotC responded with faux sincerity and a reference to tar and feathers, and then JC2 went overboard. Yes, it would be an offensive reference had it been made in an offensive context - but it wasn't. It was a criticism of the way people were ganging up on JC2, ffs!
