Breaking news: HoC Speaker to resign today

We probably need a tax expert here (clearly I'm not :D) but I was told that the tax wasn't demanded (it wasn't owed to the HMRC at all - basically a legal avoidance as opposed to illegal evasion) and therefore yes, HMRC will keep the money but she gets credited with it.
It looks very much like you are right here, given her very careful choice of wording about this:

Last week Blears sent a cheque to HM Revenue and Customs for £13,332. She went on: "I know paying money to HMRC to the equivalent amount if I had been liable for capital gains tax doesn't fix things.

I reckon you're right.

If no tax was due (which it wasn't,) then unless she retrospectively changes her "principal residence" for CGT purposes (which may open her up to charges that she made a false submission the first time), I imagine that she will just be crediting her tax account by that amount and, thus, is not in any way losing the GBP13,000 since it will count towards any future tax liability.

Disgusting!

Yep. She's still saying that she is not liable for the tax, so it must have gone as credit.

I may have to fire off some e-mails.

First barrel fired.

Ms Blears

I noticed this quote in the Guardian from you:

""I know paying money to HMRC to the equivalent amount if I had been liable for capital gains tax doesn't fix things."

Indeed it does not. But could you clarify something for me, please. Did you correct your tax records and pay the capital gains tax that would have been liable had you designated this property as your second home for tax purposes as well as for expenses? Or have you merely paid HMRC a £13,332 credit against your future tax liabilities?

Regards

I see today someone has been fired for claiming 30k of gardening expenses including a floating duck island. You really couldn't make this shit up.

Yes. That's why the Tories were slightly slow to go for the throat with Martin - they didn't want a third Labour speaker in a row, whilst Labour doesn't want a bye-election right now.

John Bercow looks like a good bet. He has a lot of Labour support and the Tories hate him, but can't bellyache about it being yet another Labour speaker.

(Just reread your post - doesn't have to be three different parties nominating, just three nominators who aren't from the same party as the candidate.)

that might've been a better idea actually, although I'm sure they could con someone into voting for their man

Esther Rantzen is threatening to pull a Tatton on Margaret Moran, and it seems likely that others will follow suit. Hogg has announced he won't be standing and deselections have been promised by both Brown and Cameron, so it won't just be independents standing on an anti-sleaze ticket.

Fucking Esther Rantzen bandwagon hopping bint.

I think the Torys are going to win by a landslide

I can't imagine why she or anyone else thinks she's a good answer to the expenses scandal.

Obviously, she's free to stand, but if she does I hope she provides two things:

1. A fairly full account of her earnings over, say, the last two or three decades, including expenses claimed, but mostly just showing what salary the BBC and other employers paid her. I strongly suspect she is one of the supposed stars who have been paid ridiculously large sums.

2. An account of her political views. It's up to the voters whether they elect someone on a simple anti-fiddle platform, but I think it's unwise to vote for anyone without knowing his/her politics. I wouldn't buy a pig in a poke.

There's going to be a lot of ridiculous things happening. It will be fun to watch.

I'd say more one of just being f-ing hopeless at his job. remember, the same scheme ran under St. Betty of Boothroyd

No I don't remember Betty, tho' I've heard the name. But once Martin's jailed for his conspiracy, if what you say is true, they should surely be coming after her too - it's not rocket science as far as I can see.

I do hear, though, that some woman called Elizabeth Filkin also had a large hand into this mess at one point or another.

What the hell happend to her?
