Breakfast in Brixton on a Sunday

Interesting... very interesting. Is it any good though? I'm used to Phoenix standards, after all.

At 99p you can't expect much. I actually always ate ham, egg and chips for £1.19 when I worked near there. But a mate ate the full English every day. The sausage didn't look that great if I am honest.

The Lounge is totally over-priced and underwhelming.

There's a decent greasy spoon almost opposite the bus garage on the other side of Streatham Hill. recent management change, i think, and pretty good - predictable but reasonable quality and low prices

Not brixton but me and the missus reguarly head to Gastro (from Peckham,) opposite Clapham Picture House on Venn Street (I think) for the French Greasy Spoon. Fantastic placem, though a little expensive but you do get decent ingredients which makes it so much more worthwhile,.

up brixton hill, just past 'The Fridge', but b4 'Top Joes' thsi little portugese place

wicked tings, get a base brekkie then add all the extras u want, u get a phat plate for about £6

I've been to Gastro and loved it, but definitely wouldn't describe it as a greasy spoon! I had to dress up, and there was champagne (and Carl Cox at another table!).
I don't like Lounge either. I went in a few times for coffee, which was fine but nothing special, then had a sandwich which was actually inedible. That was a couple of years ago. Btw, the best thing to have at the Phoenix is Kay's moussaka and chips. Mmmmm.

I've been a couple of times to Gastro and it's basically like going to France! Lovely but well pricey and extremely un-vegetarian friendly... not surprisingly!

Definitely not a greasy spoon.. not even une gargote!! :D (although it's much more relaxed of a Sunday morning than an evening - although I've only been 2x - once a Sunday morning and once an evening!!)

oooooh - I didn't know they did that. I love their burritos :)
It's fan daba dozoy. The only problem is that it's almost to much food to eat.
And because it's sunday you can have a chat to the people your eating with without having to shout over the sound system.

There's a little portuguese cafe towards the bottom of stockwell road next to the far side pub that'll do you toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomato, black pudding, chips and beans (if these don't offend) + tea or coffee for 4 quid. Its nothing fancy, just yer solid builder's sort of fry up. Anyway it always gets my vote.

From what I've heard SW9 bar up from M+S do the posh fry up thing but you pay for it, around the 7/8 quid mark I think. It is meant to be quite nice tho I've never been myself

S'okay *shrugs*. Had better. And pricey - oh yes.

Used to be good - not sure if they've changed chefs but the last 2 times I've been it was pretty crap (overcooked eggs, manky bacon).

Have to agree. For the money you want better ingredients. No better than a breakfast less than half the price elsewhere

thought i'd try Honest Food this morning after the tip on here, very good sausage, bacon and egg. £7.95 with tea, so not cheap but quality stuff and decent toast too. Downside is bad chairs, and a very noisey chiller cabinet oddly with a full price christmas pud in it.

rock steady eddies in camberwell is my recommendation for a cheap fry up. It has crazy customers.

A bit further than Brixton, but I remember when I was younger going to Asda in Clapham Junction with my mum for their 99p five piece breakfast.

Are they still doing it, this was the early 90's though?

Johnnies cafe on Coldharbour Lane does it for me every time.
Once when I was a little kid I accidentally put sugar on my chips instead of salt in there :( I've never been back.

That's nothing compared to my school canteen, which once put salt instead of sugar over their ring doughnuts.

That was about 20 years ago, but my mouth still puckers up and dries at the memory of it.

Bleurgh! Our school doughnuts were disgusting - really tough horrible dough with nasty, bitter, gelantinous and congealed jam inside. One literally made me retch once and I ran round in a huff telling everyone who worked at the school I was going to sue them :o
I was a little joy.

My mate did that in there in there one hungover morning last summer, they pished themselves. He's never been back either.

Went to Negril yesterday: pretty good all round but a little more expensive than the prices I'm used at at Cafe On the Hill. For 4 quid you can get sausage, black pudding (yum), egg, chips, beans, tow toast and a mug of tea.
that place is legend but doesn't open on a sunday
