Breakfast cereals (particularly cornflakes): Kelloggs vs. unKelloggs

Your thoughts please.

My mum used to put them in tupperware... I think it was so we couldn't tell whether they were branded or not. Most breakfast cereals go soggy so quickly I don't think I could tell whether it was an own brand or not now.

I eat whichever museli is on offer or porridge :D

I'm disappointed with the clumsy comma placement in this sentence.

Why? It's not like the, normally not very fastidious, poster has acted out of character.

And criticising the critic is a shoddy defence. I'm very disappointed in you.

Again.

Some of the own brand ones are ok, but avoid the Somerfield value/no frills range cornflakes - so very, unpleasantly, wrong.

The only thing I used to like about cornflakes was the Metallic irony taste.
I found that some own brand ones were more irony than kellogs, so preferred them. Others had no iron taste at all. I think Sainsburys were irony, and tescos were lacking in irony, with kellogs somewhere in the middle.

If you put a load of cornflakes in a bag with water, and then put a magnet to the side, you can see all the iron filings attracted to it. So I am told.

i buy own brand cereals.... sometimes because I hate Nestle, and sometimes just because I think they're just as good (or the difference is so that I don't actually give a toss) than the branded.

I don't buy cornflakes though. Sorry I can't help more :(

For some reason I fancy some Cornflakes. We don’t have any in because we don’t normally eat them. Because we don’t like them. I’m not sure why I want them. I might be pregnant.
Maybe you looked in a mirror and hypnotised yourself? :hmm:

In the 15 years since I started this thread, I've improved as a human being and no longer eat breakfast cereals regularly. When I occasionally do, I have them with water obviously, because putting them in milk is one of the most repulsive habits of our society.

Porridge is so versatile that all other cereals are pointless, really, but those mini shredded wheats just about pass muster as an alternative. Not the ones with flavoured fillings, of course.

It's just a shame that it leaves you feeling more hungry than you did before you ate it.

That’s absolute nonsense. It is a slow release food, so it is less likely to kill you in the long term, but it is always perfectly satisfying at the time.

Perhaps you have been covering your porridge in cream and golden syrup, and that is why you are left with cravings after glumly licking your spoon clean. In which case, have it with nut butter and freshly ground black pepper. Or salsa verde.

I can't figure out how cornflakes or cereal in general were ever regarded as much of a healthy breakfast - though I seemed to have hollow legs as a child...
I haven't eaten (bran flakes / fruit and fibre) since my seriously overweight days.

I'm currently doing cold turkey from muesli - which I was eating for dessert, not breakfast....

You’ve said this about muesli before. How about switching brands? There is a Jordan one which is almost all unsweetened oats, with only a couple of raisins and almonds thrown in.

Even jumbo oats in unsweetened oat milk are too many extra calories - though there's usually banana involved...

brand cereal is one of the more extortionate markups but it does nearly always taste better than the supermarket version. Probably not in proportion to the difference in cost but certainly better.
