bread makers are crap

Glad to know your sleepless nights are over.

Any particular recomendations from the magic recipe book? I think the recipes over sugar based on the first attempt. Tonight we may be trying the rustic french loaf for breakfast, if we can get the rye flour.

I like the honey and sunflower recipe, my fav so far - I've only made about four of five loaves to date though. Might try a new one tonight. I'm thinking sun dried tomato and olive.

I'm also just about to purchase The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook which claims to work for most varieties of bread machine, for more inspirational yumminess (may not be compatible with my diet though :()

If you've made crap bread it is YOUR fault, not the breadmaker. The breadmaker did not get the measurements wrong, or whatever else caused the crap bread :p

There is a large number of breadmaker fans in here mate.
You may find that out shortly ;) There are also traditionalists who make bread 'properly'!!
*raises hand* I prefer making bread "properly", but a breadmaker represents a pretty good compromise, and I can understand the attraction of lobbing the stuff in in the evening, and waking to nice fresh bread.

Herbsman, I take it from this thread that you're continuing to have trouble getting a result? What's happened?

I never used the breadmaker, and the person who did make the bread didnt do anything wrong, its just that the bread was crap compared to real bread
Well, something went wrong, then. Can you be more specific about the crapness of the bread?

the crust was crap, not crispy like oven bread. the bread tasted and texted* like it was not cooked in an oven.

*texted = had a texture

Ah. Steam condensing, I expect. If the breadmaker had been opened and the loaf taken out as soon as it had finished cooking, I think that would not have been a problem.

The thing that annoys me most about breadmakers (apart from the old single-use-appliance thing) is those paddles. Someone said earlier about ones with retractable paddles, and I'd agree. The few times I used Ms Pembrokestephen's, before consigning it to the top of the cupboard, it was a bloody nightmare picking the paddles out of the bottom of the loaves.

we've kinda had mixed results from our breadmaker.

Sometimes its been fabby, and has worked like a charm and made yummy bread.

Sometimes though, its produced something that looks like it came from ancient babylon, eeven though we've followed the instructions to teh absoloute letter.

This thread has inspired me to give it another go, and if it goes pete tong, i shall ask for advice here :)
