Brazil vs England

Surprised joe cole isn't in the squad over Jenas. Don't think either of em have played much football recently and Cole is much better, and can play on the left.

Wut? Jenas has had 8 EPL appearances this season out of 12 games. Him and Huddle have been vying for the AMC slot.

Agree that Cole's a better player, but Capello's made it pretty clear that people need to be playing if they're gonna get selected. Cole's only just come back from injury.

I might set up my own newspaper especially for it. Now's a great time to get into that industry, I hear....when they least expect it...

Isn't it around about this point in the season before a tournament that England tend to produce a good result in a meaningless friendly and all and sundry start proclaiming we're going to win the bugger?

Hmm, hard to say this is a worse chance til we see who's fit :)

i think we've got a much better array of strikers if they're all fit, this time around, and the climate in South Africa will, at last, be good for the English game. Most tournaments it's so hot that England are buggered before they even start.

Who was there in 2006 that won't be this time?

all a usually dyed in the wool england optimist i can't say i'm very confident, especially when you look at the midfield options available. i think fabio will go for milner/carrick/barry/swp and i can see us giving the ball away quite a bit and not getting it back for long periods.

Rio Ferdinand... ;) :p

Nope, that was 2006, and we cocked it. Right up. All the way up.

Or 2002, really. Look back at that tournament and it was basically a clear run for us if we could've held onto that lead against Brazil. Which, of course, we would never've done in a million fucking years.

Hmm, my mate who lived in Japan said months before that tourney that basically we had no chance because of the weather.

South Africa's the first time a tournament will be played in the sort of climate that our players like, around 20 degrees, and the tempo will be fast - when I watched the Confederations cup i thought well this will suit our players really well. The USA are basically a poor man's England and they got to the final.

Definitely 02. All that was left was Turkey, Germany (shit Germany), Brazil and South Korea (I think it was). If we'd beaten Brazil, we'd have been them and we can definitely beat any of those teams and could back then too. DAMN YOU, SVENNIS!!! I loved you, man!

First time except all the Euro tournaments we've done shit in. We are basically shit.

It's true though, Japanese summer is exceptional cos of the humidity.

Yeah but we had a nasty group draw in 02. Sven did well to get us out of that group - I remember reading it and thinking we're totally fucked, didn't expect us to make the knockouts. then we beat a quite handy Denmark team 3-0 which was impressive imo. We were never going to beat Brazil in that heat

What was the group - Nigeria (who were decent then), us and Sweden was it? Can't remember the other team...oh yeah, Argentina. Yeah, that actually does have a group of death ring to it.

Hmm, most of mainland europe still gets pretty hot. Last one in a coolish climate was probably 92

Yeah, but how much hotter is it at the end of june/start of july than it was in May when the season was still running or it is throughout August when we start up again? I'd say they could handle it, definitely, just seems like an excuse to me over and over and over again. Who likes playing in mad heat, anyway?! And, yet, some team always wins the things...
