:(aw saw him being interviewed by Wossy a couple of months back and thought what a thoroughly amiable chap he was....:(

that too, should be in his obituary :D

You mean...

Stephen Gately, the least twattish member of Boyzone, died in his sleep yesterday. He was 33, the age of Christ.

But seriously...

I was no Boyzone fan, but he seemed like a decent guy and I respected him for making a very public coming out seem like the most straightforward thing in the world.

How many people posting on this thread would be long gone if they'd died at 33?

i met stephen a few times. him and his partner andy were both really sweet, amiable, and eminently loveable people. always a terrible tragedy when someone nice dies young.

rip stephen xx

He always did come across as a very likeable lad, tbf. Wouldn't harm a fly type - it's reassuring to hear that borne out by people who met him cos a lot of the time it's a carefully constructed image to mask a total shithead. See - Darren Day being the new cliff richard in the early 90s.

That was never gonna happen. Couldn't mask that much of a cunt if you tried.

His people had a fucking good go of it though - he even did the summer holiday musical didn't he? Personally, I have wanted him to die ever since he went out with and then - quite breathtakingly - cheated on and dumped Anna Friel.

i've met lots of slebs...most of them fit into the above category.

stephen, and in fact most of boyzone, didn't belong in the 'wanker' category. they actually are a thoroughly nice bunch of sweet lads. my heart goes out to them and to andy (stephens partner).

and to the twat that thinks it's funny to be insulting...leave it a day or two eh. bit of respect wouldn't hurt. not for a pop star, but for someone who's died way too young.

You don't have to subscribe to celebrity to find a young man's death sad. Grow up.

Not really a question of 'growing up' it is a question of perspective nobody knows this guy so how can they say they 'care' or that they are 'sad'? It might be sad to those that know him how can you be sad about someone you don't know? I find it odd, it is surely ridiculous if you think about it.

28 year old Verdi Singh died Last week in Bolton. He got run over by a truck, Is anyone really sad about that? Do you feel sad about that? Millions of people are dying every week across the globe, but they are not in Boyzone.

My friends nephew died last week in the Samoan Tsunami nobody can really claim to be truly 'sad' about that , I can though, because I know them. They may say it or refer to it as tragic, but I do get pissed off with the way we all have to have an opinion of people we actually don't really know or more to the point 'celebs'.

So it's still considered cool to play the " I cant be sad I dont know him/her/them " card?? I remember that argument well as the cornerpin of the slightly unsociable, angry teenager in school......empathise lad and swallow your pride.

Yes, those things do sadden me. Anyone dying young or in pain or in shitty or tragic circumstances saddens me. It doesn't take over my day, but i can spare a moment while hearing or reading about it to think 'aw, poor sod...that's a real shame, i wouldn't like to be in their families shoes right now.' And also i think there maybe a split second of being grateful that you, your family and friends are all in one piece and realising how lucky you are that that's the case, coz someone somewhere is going through their own personal version of hell right now. It's called empathy, and most of us have it. And you don't have to know somebody personally to feel it towards them.

What i certainly wouldn't do is start taking the piss out of someone dying purely on the basis that 'i don't know them, so who gives a fuck'. Because that would make me a bit of a dick.

You can only feel sad about the things you here about. I cried this week about a girl who went missing in 1996, and whose bones were found this week by the side of the motorway. Did I know her? No. So why did I feel sad? It's called empathy. You could try looking it up in a dictionary if you don't know what it means.
