Boycott Tescos

In Bristol Tescos are taking over. The city's covered with their stupid superstores so now they've started "going local".
Here in Totterdown we've already got a Tesco Express which is shite beyond description but gets loads of custom and is screwing other business. And now the bastards are spreading them out everywhere - Gloucester Road, Clifton etc.
The next phase in the evil masterplan seems to be to take over the city centre as well. They're now putting in an Express store on Wine Street. Where will it all end?

Probably Co-op. There food labelling is amazing, there's loads of fairtrade and organic stuff (mainly own brand) and it's still pretty cheap.
Problem is there isn't one near me.

Whoops. Co-op is of course the most ethical option. The least ethical? Not sure.

that's least unethical.

and the co op near me has no parking, or it's 3 busses away if you want to suggest public transport to me. And it dosen't ahve the range of stuff i need.

They also seem to have issues about opening tills. when i did use them regularly, i'd often be 45 mins wait to get a few bits because the idea of having staff who restock shelves and cover tills at busy times seemed beyond them.

Netto are shit, that have nothing other than crap for sale.

lidl's staff have a nasty attitude, one of their women on the tills grabbed the trolley and rammed it into my stomach last time i went there, sorry, i don't care how shit the pay may be, assaulting people isn't on. When i complained the manager called security to come stand behind me and intimidate me into keeping quiet, rather than ask the bitch to appologise.

what['s left?

I was wondering whether the Co-Op had an internet store, but apparently they don't - well, they do, but only for electrical goods and financial services. Which is a shame.

Believe it or not Lidl staff are paid more than most other supermarket workers.
£7 an hour approx compared with other places minimum wage rate

I don't do my main shop in any supermarket, only small businesses. Costs me slightly more and less convenient but i enjoy it.

I won't boycott tesco though, because when i'm in a rush and need a drink its useful, and their all-day breakfasts are good.

And one by the bus station in Kingsdown. I'm quite pleased about that though as it will be well handy for work, and Star shop closed down ages ago and shows no sign of re-opening.

They used to sell my favourite yoghurt in there as well. :(

We've been using this bunch http://www.abel-cole.co.uk they are quite good and not knowing what you're going to get is actaully quite fun.

Yes, I use them too, and I'm really happy with them.

A friend also said that they would be more expensive than Tesco for home delivery. So one week I did a price comparison - it came out EXACTLY the same. I'm much happier to use abel & cole ... also because their environmental stance isn't just related to organics and local suppliers, it extends to fuel in their delivery vans, no air freighting etc.

Yes, but they don't sell Ready Brek, do they? Or Heinz Baked Beans?

but then, they always seem to be rushing around.

Look, I know you all have your favourites but I just want people to commit to boycotting Tesco.
This is the first time I've felt this strongly that something is just plain wrong, and Tescos is wrong.
If you can do it and it won't cost you, then please join me and boycott the bastards.

I have boycotted Tesco for about the last six months because:

- they're taking over the UK and a monopoly on food is a scarey thought
- they stock very little branded stuff which means half the time you're forced to buy their own branded goods, even though they're shit
- they blackmail townplanners to let them build new stores. In my hometown, they said they'd build a much-needed bypass. If the town would let them build a fuck-off hypermarket on it. There was a huge outcry and the application was eventually turned down. There is still no bypass :(

You are on my list of heros :D

The Co-Op near here is dreadful. It's murky and dingy despite only having been built a couple of years ago, the staff are unfriendly, the shelves are half-empty and it's vastly overpriced - comparable in price to the Waitrose up the road! I tend to use the Somerfield on my estate.

that's ok. just don't use Tesco.

we dont have a market and public transport doesnt run to/from our nearest market becuase its on a sunday and a 2 1/2 hr bus ride away

Where's that then? Reading!!?

And another thing about Co-Op! They have their own in-store "radio station" which pipes commercial radio adverts for cars and phones at you while you shop - if they're going to do that, I'd like a discount on my shopping.

I am sorry, but you haven't presented a good case for me to boycott Tesco in particular.
What, not even one pound in every eight spent at Tesco
FFS even on taste values, Tescos should be a no no :p

So, they are popular and have lots of stores. In itself, this is not a reason for boycotting them.

What do you mean by "taste values"?

I mean that they sell 'value' stuff, not quality. I'm just being a snob :o I really just want people to boycott Tescos because I think they have too much power

It's tricky though. The problem IMO is finding a way to create affordable, sustainable and ethical alternatives. There's a massive and entrenched system of petrochemicals-agribusinesses-supermarkets that's heavily subsidised because it's big and rich enough to lobby politicians and work the subsidy system, get legislation and planning decisions made in its favour and can afford to do stuff like sell loss leaders to kill off all the local competition.

If you don't have the time or surplus cash to seek out alternatives, or you're someplace there aren't any alternatives, it's hard to resist the temptation to do business with them and one can hardly blame people for failing to do so.

What we need are viable alternatives. There's clearly strong and growing demand for healthy, ethical and sustainable food, grown and sold locally.

Tesco rule where I live.
I am going to have to go to great lengths to avoid shopping there.
I have just decided that the time has come to tell Tesco to fuck off. It's going to be very inconvenient and cost me more money but the time has come for me to put my money where my mouth is.
If people don't stand up toTesco, there will be no alternative soon and it will be too late to do anything.
