The heavyweight gold medal match between Tischenko and Levit was on tonight. It was a good fight. It also ended with one of the most embarrassing robberies I've seen for years. Levit won the fight as far as everyone but the three judges were concerned. The scoring has been dubious at times, but mostly the problems have arisen in close fights or have been the result of referees deducting points for no obvious reason. This was just abysmal and it happened in what may be the highest profile match of the Olympics.

Watched that and was baffled, wondered if they'd scored it on his whole route to the final because he looked well beaten.

That was corrupt as fuck, glad he didn't hold back in the post fight interview.

Just read that the rules were altered in the run up to these games to prevent any appeals

Well that's my enjoyment of the boxing pretty much fucked in two days. What's the point in watching when you can't have the slightest faith that the judging will reflect the fight?

As someone pointed out on another forum, the Russian who was the beneficiary of the decision today had already been given a gift in the first round and will almost certainly be outboxed by Shakur Stevenson in the next. Just how blatant can the judges get? Could they actually be brazen enough to give a guy the gold when he's standing there looking like the elephant man after being beaten four times in a row?

Somewhat bizarre that Nicola Adams has guaranteed herself a medal with one fight! Let's hope she can win a couple more and make it gold

Buatsi ran into a much smoother, more experienced boxer in the semi. He just didn't have the foot movement to close the ring off effectively and found himself chasing and being picked off. Still a great breakthrough for him at these games. With a bit of improvement to his footwork and head movement he could be a very serious pro contender.

The Boy danny la rouge is probably wrong.

Sounds a bit like the other semi, tbh. I always find it a bit odd watching the Olympic boxing as there always appears to be one or two fighters who are just far better than the rest of the competition.

Incidentally, 4 x 2 minute rounds for the women - that seems a bit stupid to me.

And I thought head guards had been done away with as the authorities had finally cottoned onto the fact that the increased turning moment increases concussions? Do they *really* need to do a separate study just for the women.

4 by 2 has the problem that it leads to draws on the cards and then countback/tiebreakers. It has the benefit of not making the scoring in the first round as completely decisive as it has tended to be in the mens. The men did fight 4 by 2 for a while, I'm not sure what the justification for having different formats is now. Regarding the headgear, I completely agree. Either they help or they harm, having the men without them and the women with them is just bizarre and is presumably a straightforwardly sexist decision to minimise how "brutal" the women's sport looks. Which is really very fucked up if they are right that the headgear increases the risk of brain injury.

AIBA admit that some of the judging has been "below the standard expected" and remove some judges. They don't reverse any of their substandard decisions however.

Oh for fucks sake, Nikitin, the beneficiary of the above robbery is too battered from his "win" to fight in the semi-final and has withdrawn to go home and polish his bronze medal. Shakur Stevenson, the highly touted American prospect, gets a walkover to the gold/silver decider.

La Cruz, arguably the best pound for pound boxer in the tournament is currently in the process of winning Gold against Buatsi's Kazakh conqueror in the Light Heavy final.
