Boxing Vs Mixed Martial Arts

sure, why not?
i'm always open to new arts.
and i love the look of kali - very beautiful, like some artistic violence.
if i could choose my death - then death by a kali expert would be acceptable.

i'm better at BJJ than i am in wrestling.
there are loads of better people than me but i can show some drills. the escapes. armbars. chokes.
without knowing your skill level, i dunno what i skills i can trade with you.

there are two places where i roll.
one of the them is free.
and if we can get there early on a saturday, the mats are ours - providing you help me set it up.
hell, i know someone on this thread who will be interested also.

funnily enough, my BJJ instructor wants to set up a tournament.
he's invited fighters from any martial art/fighting system to challenge a few BJJ guys.
be interesting. may catch it on video and stick it on youtube.

Well my main instructor, amongst many other things, is BJJ brown belt, but in a way I'm just looking to have some experience outside the group I normally train with - it's always good to get another perspective on things - My BJJ was just coming along , I was just starting to feel less inept when I tried to tough out a neck crank and as a result haven't grappled for a few years now

my problem is I'm not free on weekends though due to parental obligations ...

Who do train BJJ with? (PM if you prefer)

What's the tournament rules then - pure BJJ?

neck cranks are illegal in comps now.
but it's good to practice them anyway.

i recommend training with the guys in brixton.
they're very original. works more like an open mat.
no instructor but a space where people try out moves.
some of the guys are very hardcore.

and best things is...it's free...

check your pm.

1993 called, and it wants it's idea back.

Yer, that is exactly why UFC started. The fist UFC's are the best ones as it was always guys from 1 style up aginst Royce, and BJJ always won, though the wrestlers where the hardest to defeat. Becuase the traditional martial artists mostly had no idea how to grapple.

But now, I am not so sure, as MMA was orginally just a combination of striking and BJJ, but now it has evolved far beyond that to almost it's own system. So if under normal MMA rules a well rounded MMA fighter was up aginst a pure BJJ guy, I would not reckon the BJJ guys chances are that good, as they are not trained for striking, the clinch, ground&pound etc Doing a Royce would not work aginst them.

THOUGH, if it was dudes from traditional martial arts like Karate, Judo or the many Kung Fu styles it would be 1993 all over again :D and actually would be pretty fun to watch.

That is a great clip.

And there was a comment about strikes to the groin whilst in Guard earlier in this thread... if I remember rightly there was no rules aginst groin stikes in the early UFC's.

i'm not a UFC fan tbh.
but do find it enjoyable from time to time.

yeah, MMA has evolved.
tis why you have guys like eddie bravo coming out...

you know, i think he'll (instructor) will do it like a martial arts comp.
just like 1993 - cos it's to do with other schools in the same building.
will youtube it. lol!

Sounds like you did a simlar older-style judo to what I did. Half our sparring started from kneeling or on the floor!

Those rice mats hurt like crap to crash into as well :D

Yup - trained at Pinewood club in Berkshire and yes, first half of the 2 hours was always spent entirely on the ground!

Sensei was Don Werner....who was getting on a bit when he trained us.....and is still going!

He used to train my dad too.

Produced several Olympic and Commonwealth winners, including Nicola Fairbrother, who I sparred with on occasions....

Was all good - wish I had carried on now, but I started to find it very tough as I was big and heavy for my age, which meant I was competing at 13-14 with adults, who were a lot more experienced than me!

Also, I discovered beer and girls.
