"they look cool. ooh, I could get away with that"

it's the same impulse behind the drum & bass debacle

"that sounds cool, I could get away with that"

he's a chameleon, in the worst way. He's hollow and dishonest.

Well, the first example was more "they look cool, they've copped a lot off my last couple of records, I'll have a bit of that." But the actual music at that time- "Scary Monsters"- was pretty far removed from, say, Spandau Ballet. Thank fuck...

The drum & bass stuff I can not excuse, other than to say I think it's laudable for someone in his position to experiment with different genres, rather than simply resting on his laurels. Even if the results are lame...:D

As for the "hoolw & dishonest", I can't buy it: his best work, regardless of influences- about which he's always, in any case been completely honest- sounds unmistakably like Bowie and no one else.

even if I let that last point slide................. what I meant was there's nothing there, it's a facade. with any of his peers Iggy, Lou Reed, Jagger, Dylan, Neil Young there's a sense of their identity as a performer but also that you're getting something real, on some level, somewhere, from them.
but not with Bowie.

All of the overrated need to be put on a list so they don't have any say in any musical polls ever. Except for the Cowell polls which are shite.
