Boundary changes 2015/2018

A perfect example of why labour are so weak at the moment.

They should be screaming from the rooftops about this stuff. This potentially matters far more than who leads the party.

But no, they naval gaze and fight internally rather than try to fight for government :(

Unfotrtunately a few hundred LIberals eg. Kendall and wet torys have taken control of the PLP, despite the wishes of over half a million members.

It's would always be hard to fight the government on boundary changes, it is pretty easy for them to paint Labour has self-serving, wanting to preserve an in-built advantage. And I don't think the prospect of 50 fewer MPs is very difficult to sell in the current climate.

I've been going through the farcical changes in Sheffield. There is some amusement to be had as they have abolished the awful Angela Smiths seat, moving large parts into Clegg,s - making that a marginal. The rest is a lot of musical chairs, looks like Clive Betts could become my new mp almost by default. Gets confusing as one ward is omitted from all the write ups of how redistribution will work, and the bce2018 website says it will be in a constituency that would exceed the relevant limits.

The Stroud changes will remove Nailsworth and Dursley, both Labour and Berkeley which goes Tory with the likely upshot of making the seat far less marginal. Nailsworth is clearly Stroud district, Dursley a bit further off but historically so, eg their teams play in the district league. They'll be going to some cobbled together Cotswolds seat that straggles for miles with no real geographic or historical basis, apparently. No-one was consulted.

The publication of these proposals is the start of the consultation:

The Boundary Commission for England is conducting a review of parliamentary constituencies and needs your help. On this site you will be able to view our proposals, make comments, see what other people have said and learn about us and the review.

Heard that said on the radio but then a complaint that there's only twelve weeks allotted to take feedback, which if true sounds woefully inadequate.

The biggest problem with this is they've done it on registered voters, not population. That massively favours the Tories. I don't know how they can get away with that.

We don't have national ward-level population estimates in this country, so that wouldn't be easy.

Registered at the end of 2015, so ignoring the couple of million extra who signed up for the ref.

Nope, I think you can get that sort of figure based on the census ...

ONS generate estimates based on the last census for local authority areas, but not at the ward level, which is needed if you're going to be adjusting constituency boundaries.

Twatterers are saying that Corbyn's seat is to disappear, being split between Abbott's and Thornberry's.

I mentioned this on the Hackney thread too... crazy times. Does anyone know if the new "Stoke Newington and Finsbury Park" constituency would be in Hackney or Islington, or would it be a completely new borough? It looks like the latter from the consultation document but I don't know how that would work in terms of the council etc?!

Whenever I see boundary changes - electoral or administraive - proposed, I tend to associate the term "gerrymandering" with the process during the "design stages" . Call me cynical if you like, but even independent bodies have to be appointed by the party in power.

As far as I know, it used to be to the case that all London Parliamentary constituencies were part of a single borough (so eg Hackney and Islington were basically divided north and south, and Haringey was divided east and west).

But as Parliamentary constituency boundaries have been re-drawn, this is no longer the case, eg there's been a constituency which includes Dulwich (in the borough of Southwark) and Brixton (Lambeth) for a while now.

Borough boundaries don't get re-drawn along with constituency ones, so this new proposed "Stoke Newington and Finsbury Park" constituency will include part of Hackney and part of Islington, at least I think that's the idea.

I haven't yet looked at the detail of the proposals, so I may have got the wrong end of the stick

Ok that kinda makes sense, so thank you.:)

Presumably there are situations where MPs get involved with the council (like if a constituent has an issue with them and goes to a surgery) so I guess that means whoever the MP for Fin&Stk is will be dealing with two councils or something...

The link which brogdale posted above is quite useful - Boundary Commission proposals

You can zoom in to your area of interest and see exactly where the new boundaries would be and what the new constituencies will be called.

There's also a new constituency of Hackney West and Bethnal Green which crosses the Hackney/Tower Hamlets boundary

Yeah I've done that - I'm in Stamford Hill which is currently in Hackney North and Stoke Newington but will be in the new Finsbury Park and Stoke Newington... so Jezza might be my MP... I'm sure I will get used to all this exciting newness in time.
