Yeah so are nitrates and aluminium and you get a lot more of those in bottled water.

It's the dose that makes the poison.

Today I nipped into a shop on the way out to buy a small bottle of water, Evian as it happens, although their all the same. Cost me £79p.

Got me thinking, since mineral water has reletively no health benefits of normal tap water, why cant water companies/government etc sell bottled tap water for little/no profit, after all it is an essential substance! They could sell it for (e.g) 10p a bottle.

Yes - you could just fill up a bottle with empty water and take it out with you. But if i'm out-and-about without a bag or anything, chances are i'm not gonna be carrying a bottle of water.

That's exactly what they do do in Asia. All the 'mineral' water is in fact merely safe-to-drink ' municipal' water...

well they're allowed to sell stuff like coke which is hazardous to health. the chemicals from the plastic is probably though there, a fairly minor hazard to our health in the scale of things.

That is likely to do with pthalates in the PVC -not totally proved Greenpeace made big issues over pthalates but have since gone quite.

The problem is thought to be from ingesting pthalates (A chemical used as a softening agent) I would have thought the pvc used for plastic bottles would have little pthalates in the plastic.

Have you got a link for that? I find it strange that they're allowed to sell water in bottles that are hazardous to health.

You're joking? :D

Half the shit sold in supermarkets is hazardous to health. :D

I read it in a book, being old fashioned like. Will try to find a link.

There's one but there are probably more. FDA says we have nothing to worry about though, like aspartme, so I suppose it's ok. :)

I'm not disputing that plastic bottles may contain hazardous chemicals. I thought you were implying that they were more dangerous with tap water than mineral water.

What I read certainly put the case that re-use of plastic bottles encourages more leaching of the chemicals from the plastic. As re-use would probably involve filling up with water from the tap then it is probably safer not to refill with tap water, yes.

Feck off with yoiur rolly eyes sarky hippy. :p

I take it that was tongue in cheek! Just read the article in the Ecologist this month about Aspartame. as always another thing to worry about

OK
:D

But I don't believe the crap that says you shouldn't re-use plastic bottles. I've a suspicion that that "research" might have been funded by someone with a vested interest.

edit: just seen the last post. See, told you so! :D

I'm pretty sure the plastic industry has a vested interest in making us feel their products are safe too.

Who can tell eh?

Plastic is mingin.

I use to fill a big bottle from the tap every night, then stick in the fridge over night and take it to work the next day. There's no way I'm paying £1 a day for a bottle of water when it's hot.
