Boris's subterranean Isle of Man roundabout linking the nations of the Union.

Just posted this on t'other thread

norwegians have got this (worlds first?) floating tunnel thing going on.
that would avoid the munitions

its not totally impossible.
it solves nothing of course.
still needs a border check
reading that again:

"Like conventional tunnels, the floating tunnel would have escape routes that motorists could take to return to the surface in case of an emergency. And Minoretti said preliminary research regarding the proposed tunnel’s safety has been reassuring.

“We have done simulations for big explosions in the tunnel, we’ve checked for impacts of submarines, we covered scenarios where a trawler might hook onto the tunnel, and we even considered if a ship might be sinking at the surface and hit the tunnel on the way down,” Rønnquist said. “I would say things are under control. It’s a very robust structure.”

..no chance of escape route on this plan

The island of Sodor (home to Thomas the Tank Engine) occupies most of the space between Great Britain and the Isle of Man and if it were real would no doubt be the main route to Ireland with bridges connecting it to IoM and Barrow and a tunnel to Eire.
There are loads of maps on the Internet lovingly drawn by Thomas fans.
I have this mental vision of some joker showing Boris one and telling him 'Yes PM building a tunnel to Ireland is easy this is the way to go'

fukdat...I get edgy enough travelling through the channel tunnel; much as i know it's safe I can't help dwelling on my knowledge of the geological faulting and seismic activity associated with its route. Bit like those dark irrational thoughts in the night.

My mate was a senior road-project engineer years ago.

This led to many (pub-based ;) ) "discussions" including me, him and various road-protesters amongst my gang :)

I think when they attempt to build a roundabout below the IoM, we should all reunite in a Ramsay or Douglas pub, to discuss how absolutely shite the idea of a subterranean roundabout surely is?

And on a motorway route??
We might even all agree! :)

Any roundabouts linking one motorway to another (frinstance M40 to M42, M5 to M42, etc.) , surely always include BRIDGES as well?? ;)

A bridge under troubled waters may be required for this Scotland to NI project, I'd hazard ;)

Bur Johnson is just obsessed with glory-engineering big-boy vote-collecting "plans", it would seem

He was probably Inspired by what they did here.

He saw the Faroe Islands underground roundabout. He wants to copy it. The twat!

The moment I saw the "story" I thought about the Faroe Islands roundabout. I can just see Boris being shown this and, child-like, becoming obsessed with doing it himself. Possibly donning the hi-viz and hard-hat for the first photo ops at Heysham ferry port.

I just hope someone leaked the proposals deliberately to highlight just how desperate Boris must be for anything to claim his own beyond the COVID-era. I also hope the Manx government were able to meet in person to laugh themselves silly, it can't have been easy not to piss themselves to such an extent that the island was in danger of flooding.
