Boris to raise minimum wage

it's also worth pointing out that inflation is currently running at 3.3% (yeah right) and this represents a 2.7% increase so the correct headline would have been 'Boris to cut London minimum wage'
Very good point.

So, when did the Guardian become a Boris fan, then?

It would have been very easy to spin this the other way, wouldn't it?

'Boris gives lowest-paid Londoners a below inflation raise.'

That wouldn't really have been fair either, since it seems that all employers are doing that right now or not giving raises at all, but it's closer to the facts.

Very good point.

I stopped reading Private Eye recently because it was so pro-Boris (though it might changed again since then).

Does this really apply to "tens of thousands of Londoners"???

How many people does the GLA, LDA and TFL employ??

because it applies to the companies they contract with as well. if they want the business you have to sign up to pay your staff the living wage when the likelihood is they are getting paid at or just above minimum wage.

some councils are doing this as well with contracts.

you could argue of course that if the contracts were never outsourced in the first place it wouldn't be needed but we are where we are.

Ken started this, some Boroughs and Johnson are continuing it. This is a good thing.

It's not pro Boris anymore (I can't remember it being all that pro anyway).
He is one of their favorate targets.

innit.

If Boris J persuaded his party leadership to favour a substantial increase in the Nat Min Wage, that would be great.... and very very surprising.

Indeed.

Some kudos needs to go the trade unions (yes, I know I would say that), who negotiated this.

oh yes. And, if anyone wants to be generous, to the various christian groups who've pushed it too.

according to this article some 3,000 cleaners who are subcontracted to the likes of Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch have also got the LLW. This is spreading, and can be used by any NMW or low paid Londoners as part of their future wage discussions.

I expect the Guardian is just running a story it got off the news agencies, which in their turn will have just forwarded a statement prepared by Boris's PR people. The essential facts may be true but the spin changes the impression.
