Boris Johnson Last Night

I have this vision of him with his cronies, guarded populists all, the Prince Philips or Norman Tebbits of this world, blunt in private but careful when the great unwashed or microphones are around.

The entire Conservative and Unionist Party is rebranding itself as being cuddly, caring, sharing and unlikely to frighten the servants. He's their official candidate, he's on-message, he's as untrustworthy as Livingstone but suffers one significant difference and that is that he has no connection with London, he's just been parachuted in because he gives good telly..

I see your point and I feel a little bit of this myself but hey how else are we to get rid of Livingstone?

I don't agree with some of the stuff that he has said in the past but he was questioned on the issue of multiculturalism and he said that he supported the teaching and support of religions and cultures other than the main one and how he was amazed and enthused by his son learning about other faiths at school.

He also said that he would support measures that would bring people together and stated that he would never ever invite to City Hall those who were sexist, racist, anti semitic and homophobic (unlike Livingstone).

Blimey, and you swallowed that as sincere?

Wouldn't you say his unguarded, non media-handler approved quotes are far more telling? And his jokey, unpleasant tory pleasing bollocks about 'watermelon smiles' is beyond just a bit of a laugh in my book. The fact that folks like the Lawrences recoil from him and his convenient political ideals, and casual, reductive racism about 'tribal warriors' should give you a good indication.

Look,, this is the daft, divisive cunt who talked about 'piccaninnies' and 'watermelon smiles' . He's a strangely likeable duffer, but that doesn't mean that he should be put in charge of a mouth, let alone one of the world's most successful multicultural city

He's certainly been cultivating this persona, quite successfuly, but he's nowhere near as daft as he makes out... the opposite IMHO....

You're off your trolley! Johnson's comments about "piccaninnies" rather obviate these nice-sounding words. Since when did Ken invite "homophobes" to City Hall. This was the man who irritated Thatcher with his support for London's LGBT community.

I detect a smear here.

Its a worry I know some of his previous comments to the media but, and this is not to lessen in anyway the Lawrences pain, but they do seem to have been co-opted by the NL establishment to such an extent that their recoil may be equally to do with disgust at such a casual racist sentiment and not wanting to displease the NL establishment.

He didn't have a 'media handler' there last night.

You don't vote against someone you vote for someone.

Yeah, he'd get them to write for his paper instead.

I must admit after ten years of NL and their propaganda and slickness it is refreshing to hear a politician who does have to go 'uh um when he is trying to recall a bit of info'

.. to what extent is all the cuddly inclusive stuff rebranding, or is this real ? An example is that Alan Duncan has just gone through a civil partnership ceremony with his partner.... unthinkable in the Tory party 25 years ago..

The 19th hole, suburban, mindless bigotry of disgusted of Tonbridge Wells is a caricature that has lost it's purpose in electoral terms, I'm convinced that the movers & shakers in the Tory party know that, & that a fancy make-over won't do the job..... in the end, it's economics, taxation & regulation that they're interested in..... hence the dumping of the old 'tory' values of the 50s....

Don't be a pillock, the fact that the Lawrence's recoiled from hearing a mayoral candidate spout a load of racist and reductive jokes to please a crowd does not necessarily have anything to do with involvement in NL. If you want, I can find more of us 'ethnics' who equally objected with no NL links.

That's beyond a slight concern slightly. And you want to back this dappy, unpleasant cunt, glossing over the obvious?

To do what? Support drivers against the congestion charge and keep the denizens of K&C happy and to fuel your anti Livingstone fixation. Laughable

You don't vote against someone you vote for someone.

well unless you are tactically voting for example bnp are standing the only clear alternative is lib dems and it's a floating vote toss up then are you doing to vote BNP to stop the Lib dems getting in ;) :D see tactical...

This would carry more weigth were NuLab not just as vile.
Livingstone has a very uneasy relationship with NuLab and I'm not convinced it's reasonable to tar him with every one of their sins. If it is, it's mostly guilt by association rather than direct evidence, eg, I'm not aware that NuLab is willing to run with something like the London Living Wage or the LEZ nor to impose punitive policies on 4x4 drivers or other selfish (but prosperous) types.

Sorry mate, but that isn't evidence of Ken's "homophobia". Again, you completely disregard his work at the GLC (and later) for the sake of making political capital.

Pitoyable.

I do agree that the GLC did alot of work in mainstreaming LGBT issues in the 80's but the Ken who is mayor now is not the Ken of old.

If you stand up on a platform and praise and embrace some medieavlist who says that homosexuality a disease that can be cured by death then you are hitching yourself to their cart to some extent.

In an ideal world yes. But when you have a mayor who is as shit as Livingstone and who is using public money to fund his own personality cult then you have to look at who is the most likely to defeat Livingstone.

I have more chance of becoming US president than Johnson has of becoming mayor. :D

I dont' agree with Boris's previous comments on race and he does have a habit of opening his mouth before putting brain into gear. I hope that he has learned from the reaction that he got previously.

Whatever else you can or can't say about him I don't think there is any suggestion Ken himself is homophobic. The criticism is of his relationship with Qaradawi.

This is the same line of argument that was used when Ken met Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness: he supports terrorism...though this time the line is "he invites homophobes to City Hall" and this is seen as the one thing that the anti-Ken mob can rally around. It's pretty weak.

Oh? But you'd quite happily vote for the floppy haired prick, wouldn't you?

Good points. Cameron knows that the sort of 80's 'fuck em all' toryism is dead and scares the voters away. I think that there is more substance in the changes in the tory party especially in relation to issues of race and sexuality.

The fact that his brain has such racist pish in there to begin with is surely a great enough concern to disqualify him as a plausible candidate? Equally it's not as though he's not got a habit of bibbling out such pieces of divisive stupidity in his haste to please whatever crowd that happens to be in front of him at the time.

He doesn'y seem to have learned anything, does he? It he had genuinely wanted to, he could have done it before the ripe old age of 45. Surely?

Be careful about predictions like that...

Ken is 8/11
Boris evens
Paddick 25/1

Obama is 10/11
McCain 13/8
Clinton 4/1
Nino unplaced as yet...

Bookies have the London election as close, & they can hardly be accussed of spin... :D
