My grandfather lived in Brixton and said the same thing. The White Horse was very popular for the theatrical crown because of the theatre opposite (the old Tent and Tarpaulin Shop) and the George IV was a popular jazz club.

i often wondered what the tent and tarpaulin shop used to be as its a strange looking building..

There are some pictures of it with history (including its time as a cinema) somewhere on this very website. But I can't find them...

IIRC the CofE renamed it Trinity Homes about twenty years ago because they assumed that everyone now assumes Asylum (when used as a building name) to have connotations of madness of the residents.
