Has anyone mentioned a book called 'junk' by melvin burgess

Tar loves Gemma, but Gemma doesn't want to be tied down - not to anyone or anything. Gemma wants to fly. But no one can fly for ever. One day, somehow, finally, you have to come down.

An uncompromising, compelling and true-to-life story of two teenagers drawn into the dangerous and destructive world of heroin addiction. This tour de force by an acclaimed and provocative writer should become a definitive teenage novel on this subject.

haven't read the whole thread so apologies for repetition but i'd recommend:

palahniuk (in particular survivor - over fight club)
nick hornby (high fidelity)
burgess - a clockwork orange
irvine welsh
jonathan coe - what a carve up! (fab, underrated book)
kurt vonnegut
and i'd also disagree with whoever said coupland's generation x wouldn't appeal to teens now :D

edit: oh and of course kafka!

I don't know if this has been recommended yet, but AS Byatt, The Virgin in the Garden quartet really helped me at that age, helped me to remember that one day I'd be an adult and everything would be different. The quartet wasn't yet written at that time, I think I just read the first two. They're all pretty good although they do get weaker in my opinion towards the end.

Room at the Top.

I finished it last night, and it's one of those that starts very well and then gets better and better. Recommended to anyone, not just angsty 18 year olds.
