she's really into 90s american stuff
Donna Tarrt Secret History
someone said it already ...but for some who is into early 90's America:
"A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" Dave Eggers

Thomas Pynchon, maybe?
The trouble with being an angsty teenager with your nose in a book is that you read a lot of stuff you can't really understand or fully appreciate until you're a bit older and have some life experience under your belt. . .
I read Closing Time, the sequel. It was brilliant for 2/3 of the book, then it became dreadful as it became increasingly obvious that Heller had no idea how to end it.Mind you, Kurt would be an obvious choice, as would Catch-22 (no one reads Heller's other books, do they?).

The Moor's Last Sigh.
Exactly. And with some of the best prose I've ever read too.Not rushdies best, but rammed full of angst

Mind you, I'm not sure that angsty books are the best recommendation for an angsty teenager. You need anti-angst. I recommend Dotty Commy's favourite Sci-Fi series, Foundation.

yes any LATER coupland .. i think the early stuff is triteGirlfriend in a Coma - Douglas Coupland
so one of my students is a real genius angsty 18 yr old lass, she was asking me to recommend her some books (and music as well....)

i reccomended her Camus, Orwell and Murakami off the top of my head but she'd read them, what else could I reccomend to her to read?
I Want to Fuck You by PP Hartnett
Wink when you give it to her to make sure she gets the message.
Vineland - Thomas Pynchon.
I tried reading it at the same time as Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho.
Needless to say, never finished it.
