Bomb?

No mention of it. If it happened it's been cleared up cos I couldn't see anything like that.

Thats bollocks, sorry. I watched it. 'Electrical fault'?

Why then did about 20 cops and firefighters spend hours surrounding a steaming, leaking suitcase? :hmm:

Going past on the bus this morning I could just see a few lifted paving stones and some EDF Energy barriers in a small area between Woolies and Dex, and everyone else going about their daily business. No workmen in attendance.

So either it was an electrical fault and there just happened to be a bag there, or it's all an elaborate conspiracy :hmm:

Yeh, I'm confused... They drilled ALL night last night. Pneumatic drills. I havent slept a wink..

It's bizarre alright. There was definitely a smoking bag down there which was being poked and prodded but fuck knows what happened, no idea why EDF would need to be drilling all night like that. Maybe it was just a coincidence.

Have you spoken to the duty sargeant at your local station, Gabi, to gain some clarrification over what you observed?

Just a thought.

A manhole cover outside Woolies flew up into the air. It's rectangular and has paving set into the top of it, so it would have looked a bit like a suitcase. When I came past a couple of blokes in overalls had refitted it. There was nothing else to be seen apart from some mud, and two coppers keeping people out of a taped off area of pavement. I asked one of the blokes what had caused it and he said "dunno...Derren Brown?"

The manhole cover thing was over 6 inches thick and took two men to lift it - must have been one hell of a bang to throw it in the air, so your b*mb suspicions don't seem unreasonable. Rather alarming that random explosions can happen under our feet. Maybe it was a gas leak? Can't imagine an electrical explosion being so powerful.

It already went off.. smoke everywhere, traffic stopped for a few minutes. A street cleaner's now taken it away.. bizarre.

scratch that. the cleaner's just put it back. and here's the cops.

:hmm: strong street cleaner.

They can be - dont forget the nature of the pipes and tubes underground will have the same effect as a gun barrel in terms of chanelling the explosion in a certain direction.

or call brixton police station 020 8649 2025

This is the phone number for the front office at Brixton and the only person you will speak to will be the station officer (either a PCSO or a PC, unless they have kept their civil staff station officer), a better number for a non-emergency call would be 0300 123 1212.

Just told my GF, "possible bomb outside KFC" she says, "what a 2nd world war unexploded one?"

Yes, of course, a 2nd world war unexploded bomb just outside of KFC.....

Hot news from a hole in the ground. The thing that exploded was a junction box. Here's its replacement:

The box is where four of these 11,000 volt cables meet:

The cover which flew in the air is at the bottom of the middle pile:

The gentlemen in the hole say these explosions happen "every time it rains" and that only one pedestrian has ever been injured.

I wish these 'gentlemen' wouldn't begin drilling at 2am and continue till sun-up.

Time and a half perhaps? How the fuck do they get away with that, imagine if they tried something similar in Chelsea.

I noticed KFC was in darkness this evening, assume it's part of their power supply that went bang? I did find it amusing that, although there's a notice on the door and all the lights are off, I noticed several people seeing if the door was open.

*shrugs*

Could be worse - a few years ago in New York there was a serious issue with Con Ed the electricity supplier, as a substantial proportion of the manhole covers were found to be connected to live rather than earthed!

New York Times said:
... Sally Haddock, a veterinarian at St. Mark's Veterinary Hospital, ... said that dogs could serve as an early-warning system -- the urban equivalent of canaries in a coal mine.

She said that during her 17 years as a veterinarian in the city, countless clients had complained to her about their dogs getting shocked, but she had doubted the claims. ... She added, ''I doubt no longer.''
