Yes I do acutally, part of my family were from Lithiuania (vilnius) originally and another half of my dad's side of the family were from russia proper/siberia ... they had to flee during the tsarist persecutions a few years before the revolution ... It will be the first time anyone in the family has gone sine they all had to move! (to germany )
excellent fun Russia - I know I ve said it before, but try to get to the Gorky House museum for a bit of Russian Art Noveau
Im doing Moscow first for "business" & then a quick escape by overland Train to Odessa ( 22 hours ), via Kiev, then over the border to Moldova / Chisinau for a day or two incl. Transnistria , then a connecting flight home
I think the present situation issymbiotic for both parties - there has been some rhetoric in recent times, but the barrier aspect is very important to the Russians - you could say much of their history has been about defining identity and physical boundaries
Much like the DPRK is a nice little puppy for the PRC to play with, Belarus has a significant role and location for Russia - Belarus itself is more akin to a bogus African state in many ways, what with the few skimming off as much as it can whilst in the process of running the place
Belarus is a fascinating place, the sad traumatic history seeps out as you travel through it
The rotting, rusting piles of German WW2 helmets & hardware lying temporaitly heaped at the side of the newly ploughed, Prarie like fields tell a story of their own
