bollywood soundtrack recommendations

killer b

That vase.
i picked up a load of 60s & 70s bollywood soundtracks from a car boot some weeks ago - i can't get enough of the shit now...

anyway, i'd like to swell the collection, but a cursory look on the internet suggests it may be a bit expensive to buy 'em in the original vinyl, so i'm resigned to buying a few compilations. so far i've earmarked Bombshell Baby of Bombay, and the other volume from the same series (both from rough trade on vinyl, natch) - can you suggest any other comps? or know somewhere selling cheap second hand bollywood vinyl (fat chance)? :)

ah, woebot... i thought he might have the answer. i agree with him about buying on sight - i got 15 of 'em for a fiver, and it's mostly ace (the sleeves sometimes have some amazing packaging too).

as it happens, a couple of the lps on that page are already in my collection... :)

Shit I just love how those strings sound! So sweet. Just listening to something at random from that vinyl rip site, and it's got the greatest surf / lounge / echo guitar track, and some really stripped back almost Indian classical sounding stuff.

1942 - A Love Story film came out in 94, ace movie, blinding soundtrack
The DJ Nasha remixes- Mumbai DJ - Dont know where you'll get em here - of Jewel Thief a movie from 1969 remixes done in 2002 are also totally unexpected sort of bangra House but with all the string Lata mangashekar singing, she the woman who introduced that really high piercing still the fenale playback singers still go for - shes also Ashas sister

i've got a 7" ep of 'the jewel thief' - not the full soundtrack, 5 or 6 songs - cracking stuff.

i'm going to put together a mix for the dj mix thread at some point soon...

well, i'd recommend don, muqaddar ka sikandar and arzoo from the links above... also dil ka raaja and kahani kismat ki, which aren't... there's also a crazy hindi version of 'jolene' on one of the albums, but i can't remember which... :D

tbh, there's quite a bit of stuff on most of them which isn't to my taste - the funk/disco/rock & roll fusion numbers are the most interesting (to my ears at least).

there's definitely enough there for a good long mix though, maybe a couple. i'll sort it out in the next week or so. :)

Wicked...for some reason in Leicester we get this extra channel on our terrestrial-only tv set, which is obviously a Hindu channel. It's fucking brilliant - the teleshopping alone is worthwhile viewing. But the best thing about it is in the mornings it shows this amazing footage of crowds of people all getting down to some devotional drone music with all these ancient yogis at the front. It'll be chilled out and peaceful for ages, then all of a sudden the band speeds up and everyone starts going mental :D Beats watching Fiona fucking Phillips, I can tell you.

My personal faves -

Raja Hindustani
Ishq
Hum
Hero #1

And I know it's not what you've asked for, but for Bhangra, there is only one for me!
The master finger stabber himself...

....Daler Mehndi! :D

heo and I spent the second evening we met (in India) in a taxi, quickly abandoning all plans we had to get to our destination, prefering instead to drive around for a couple of hours with Daler's 'Dardi Rab Rab Kardi' on repeat...(luckily the taxi driver was as enthusiastic about it as we were heh heh)...

Errrrrrrrrr.....not sure that's the word I'd use...heh heh!

Have just discovered you can listen to it though! Woohooo!!!

Go to dalermehndi.com, then 'music' then click on the 1997 option and choose it from the list!!!

Now, turn your sound up to full, imagine you're pissed as fuck  and have found respite from a sweltering night in a taxi with air-con and a great stereo........aaaaand Jab! Jab! Jab! Jab!!!!!!

And now listen to it seventeen more times..... :p

'CHEWY MOOEY, CHEWY MOOEY, CHEWY MOOOOOEY...'*

*Not the real words.

I second Raja Hindustani. Got it on tape somewhere. Takes me back to my trip to India way back in 1996 like nothing else. I swear that was all you heard across the whole country.

i can't work out how to make his website work. :(

on a positive note, i have found that version of 'jolene' i was on about earlier. crazy shit...
