BNP: What will they do next?

Griffin now back from Brussels. As expected, so far a formal link up with Jobbik, Front National, Vlaams Belang and Ataka.

So thats 5 of the 7 countries needed which is getting there- but only 11 of 25 seats needed to form a formal group so far.

As forming a group is a process, not an event, still think it will happen, probably a few months into the parliamentary term as the non-inscrit (non alligned) Euronationalist parties decide to hook up with this core group rather than waste their time as non-alligned parties with no influence

BNP are taking on 12 fulltimers from their expenses, 6 for each MEP, including a fulltimer in Brussels

Yep. Griffin may have hinted at retirement when the party was paying his comfortable salary, but now he has an MEP's massive wedge he is unlikely to step down, it's frankly ludicrous to suggest he might step down by 2013 - there is no chance, if he remains leader of the BNP he is pretty much guarateed his seat and salary until he chooses to retire - he's got at least another 12 years at the top minimum.

There is no one to replace him, and anyone who sticks their neck out and starts looking too ambitious will be fucked.

The only thing that could bring him down would be a massive scandal that just won't happen...

It was his very specific pledge that any Euro MP they get would stand down in 2013- giving their number 2 candidates some experience- we will see nearer the date. I can't see Griffin carrying on until he is 84 like LePen though.

Agree as to lack of scandal though- especially as there will be a Searchlight fulltimer camped out in Brussels for the next 5 years. They will probably be easyjetting and travel-lodging it in Brussels, with enough money in their communications allowance, staff allowance and Griffin and Brons donating money to the party for them to do without hoovering up expenses

Well they might need to rethink what they do In Europe.

The British National party's (BNP) efforts to form a coalition with other extremist groups in Europe have ended in failure.

Party leader Nick Griffin had hoped to form a grouping with parties such as Italy's Northern League and France's Front National.

Parliamentary groupings require 25 MEPs from at least seven countries, which triggers up to a million euros funding for staff and office costs.

"It appears at present we are below the threshold," Mr Griffin said after talks at the European parliament in Brussels.

"We have to see how the other political groups get on with their negotiations and if they cannot do a deal whether they will deal with us."

The BNP grouping has only attracted 12 MEPs, despite wide gains for the far-right in the recent elections.

The far-right often struggles to work together across national boundaries.

In the last parliament the Greater Romania party broke up the far-right Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty group after a spat with Mussolini's daughter, Alessandro, who said all Romanians were criminals.

The Northern League's rejection of a BNP grouping will severely hinder Mr Griffin's attempts to have a strong presence in the parliament, because they carry nine MEPs.

Geert Wilder's Dutch Freedom party, which mostly sells itself on an extreme variant of anti-Muslim thought, also rejected the BNP, despite being sufficiently extreme to be banned from entering Britain.

Mr Wilder is understood to be attempting to appeal to mainstream Dutch voters, and is furiously avoiding associations with the likes of the BNP or the National Front.

The Danish People's party is also avoiding Mr Griffin. It has also tried to avoid Jean Marie Le-Pen's National Front, after he again denied the Holocaust at the parliament.

Groupings must be declared by July 14th, for the parliament's inaugural sitting.

Dont celebrate too quickly. At the time of writing there are 65 MEPs from 20 countries who are unalligned, which is enough for 2 groups of 25 with a few to spare. A group will form around UKIP of hardline eurosceptics, but as far as I can work out the group around BNP is 14, not 12 as the Times says (Times does not mention the the FPO from Austria who have linked up)

There are others, namely 2 Greek MEPs, 9 Liga Nord, and 3 Great Roumania party who are far-right but currently unalligned.

The key are Liga Nord. The tories new AEN alliance has rejected Liga, so its up to UKIP to decide whether they want them to join up with them or not. If not, as UKIP are paraniod about linking up with Fascists, the door is open for Liga to hook up with the BNP/FN/VB etc group

i understood the article to mean that the bnp had attracted 12 *other* meps, for a total of 14. which with the two bnp would mean 16 if the fpo has joined..

They are fighting both Glasgow NE and Norwich North by elections

As expected, quite a few of their fulltimers are now on the Euro Payroll, including Cllr Chris Beverley, and both Wingfields

They have put Mark Collett as editor of their paper, Freedom, which may mean a move from it being sold to freely delivered but smaller- something on the cards before the election
