BNP in Barnsley using heroin injectors to hand out leaflets

in what way?

For starters, if you really do work in drugs services I would hope you wouldn't use a dehumanising term like 'heroin injectors' to refer to people. It's a term clearly chosen to summon up the most uncomfortable physical images, rather than describing who the people actually are, and using it really doesn't do you any favours.

Yes can't we show some respect and call them junkies or smack heads instead.

"Heroin injectors" sounds like some new fangled syringe or something. It conjures up images of the BNP standing at a street stall, injecting people with fascism

soam, dont want to teach you to suck eggs, but my post 25 is probably worth following up if someone has the time. Cheers for anything you are doing against the muppetscum.

heroin users, injecting drug users, heroin injectors , problematic substance users - all are terms in common use. As are smackhead, , Junkie etc.

The reason for using the term is not to dehumanise anyone - but the point of me making this thread is that it is noteworthy that the BNP are using people who inject heroin to distribute their leaflets (possibly paying them) when these are precisley the people who the BNP are against!?

Of course they are people, - but its the fact that they are heroin users that interests me in this context.

Sadly, it is probably their chief pursuit as humans.[/QUOTE]

Which is what makes it all the more deepressing - these are guys who for the most part have been using for 10+ years, are involved in all types of criminality, including football violence etc. None of them are in work, and mostly there days revolve around using and grafting. But they have taken a few hours out to spread the BNP message.

If they didnt get paid it shows to me how deeply the BNP agenda is spreading and is really really worrying.

To hammer the hypocrisy home even further the BNP were out in force at a public meeting (in BNP t shirts) that i attended the other day about discarded needles in a school playground, doing their best to drum up hysteria about the damaging effect that drug use is having on the local community.

We can all empathize with addiction and unemployment. But violence is a pretty solid marker that they are approaching filthdom.

Try and find out if they were paid though. We somtimes need to be prepared to fight on technicalities when parties break rules that are designed to keep things nominally fair. None are more likely to screw up than the BNP, but it's no good if they aint challenged.

How is "heroin injecters" dehumanising?

It's not the slightest bit 'dehumanising'. Nor is it 'demonising'. I'm not even sure it's 'stigmatising', though that could depend on context.

The problem here, obviously, is 'PC' arsery.

It's good that people think about language. It's good that people are sensitive about the terms used to describe people - and that does bring with it the risk of being over-sensitive. The problem is that 'PC' arses are just crap at thinking about usage.

Why? Why are they so crap? I think it's because they approach language not with a wish to understand and enjoy, but with a mission to admonish. 'PC' arses are dim, bossy twits.

Call junkies junkies. Call druggies druggies. Smackheads are smackheads, though they might well be other sorts of druggies too. I'm reliably told that nowadays people who use heroin tend also to use a variety of other drugs and, in part, use the heroin to cope with the come-down from other drugs, like crack cocaine.

Would it be better if the shooters were handing out leaflets for the green party?

The Greenies might be more friendly. Recycling of syringes? Biodegradable junkies? Fairtraded smack?

Dear me, this bullshit story shows up everything what is wrong with anti fascism.

How is it bullshite? If you are gonna accuse me of lying then explain the reasons that you think i am please.

Obviously i cant prove it to you, but its the truth!

It shows to me how deeply Fascisim?BNP have become ingrained in this area...

Dont substance misuse users lead chaotic lifestyles therefore dont usually get it together to register to vote? They might be 'flyering' but maybe unable to actually vote.

Its ironic. If the BNP go into power these same people who are handing out the leaflets would find themselves in even more dire straights than ever. The Facist policy against drug users seems to be that they are all sub-human scum who deserve punishment, not treatement. State support for addicts, in the way of substance misuse centres and rehabs would be wiped out under a BNP govt.

A lot of substance mis-users manage to keep their heads together well enough to hold down jobs, unless they're thoroughly "chaotic", even iv smack users.

True. I held down a full time job for years throughout a heavy substance misuse problem. Stereotyping of addicts pisses me off.

it's amazing how many BNP sympathisers have crawled out of the woodwork recently. Election fever or something

Do I have to be a drug addict to had out BNP leaflets? Would they still give me £20 for doing it if I wasn't. I don't fancy becomming a drug addict just to earn £20....!

along with the welfare state. Instead of "all our hard earned taxes" going on "immigrants" they'll go on prisons...

There are strict rules on how much a party can spend in elections

When the Yorkshire BNP submit their election spending details it needs to be checked that they have declared paying leafleters, smackheads or not. (confusingly these details are reffered to as "expenses" - we are not talking about putting in claims for Duck Island here but expenditure)

If it can be established that they have paid people but not declared it they could be in the smelly stuff.
Very good point, taffboy.

It's possible for people to fall foul of election law, there's all kinds of rules, like the one about not serving food at a political meeting or something... (I think that came up in Blackburn and/or Birmingham)...
