No, it's .mkv and probably Media Player doesn't support .mkv without an additional codec, as it's rubbish.
If (s?)he's having trouble with VLC and Media Player's rubbish... what are the alternatives? Media Player Classic seems quite popular, and might be worth a try. Any others?
That table shows the software encoder options, vlc uses x264 built-in , someone could have encoded that film with VSofts that supports Flexible Macroblock Ordering (FMO) and a few other features that x264 does not use.
This is not very common , but its possible. I remember when bbc released some HD h264 content and VLC could not play it at the time, its since been resolved..
