Blu Ray

Divx and xvid are ways to store films, both started off as computer only but now most medium end or better DVD players can handle them. Like mp3s are for music. If you tried to put a cd with mp3s in your old radio it won't work but some new ones can play them.

It could, probably (You should look for DVD RW compatible) but you would have to convert it into DVD format, that's a little complicated the first few times you do it but the software to do it is free so it's not necessarily a problem.

This has all been prompted by me seeing that you can now get "Baraka" on Blu-ray, which sounds fantastic...

My gf's got a PS3 and a 26" set. We already had Baraka on DVD and it looked superb. Bought Baraka for her on Blu-ray 3 weeks ago and it looks utterly utterly stunning, jaw dropping. A massive difference, even on a 26".

She's also got Planet Earth on both DVD and Blu-ray, and unlike Baraka there seems to be very little difference in quality between the two formats...

(ETA: actually it varies - some bits of planet earth look about the same, others you notice a difference).

I've just treated myself to a Samsung 1080p 50 inch plasma for Christmas - gets delivered next week - and so will definitely be getting myself a Blu-Ray player (or PS3) shortly. While I only had a 32" 720p/1080i tv I was a little unsure, but this will definably seal the deal.

I think with Planet Earth some was film and some video. It's getting on now so HD wasn't really something they would have considered. They might be able to upscale the video a bit but there are real limits to that. On the other hand, the stuff they shot on film would look great.
