I suspect that argument is undermined somewhat by the huge boom in Internet poker in the last decade. Especially if you look at the daytime participation. Internet poker feeds tv and tournament participation.

I'd imagine the number of female participants was, and still is, a factor - probably the leading factor - but it has diminished.

I'd say that when there is no longer a perceived utility in the tournaments, they will be dropped.
