So Gang of Four weren't mentioned quite often in relation to franz ferdinand, no?

No, Gang of Four were definitely mentioned in relation to Franz Ferdinand, learn to read, you daft fucker. But Bloc Party weren't mentioned in relation - stylistically - to Franz Ferdinand

Look the fact is it's angular dancey post punk, it's always going to get compared to gang of four, if you can't see the resemblence or influence you must be fucking stupid.

I'm not stupid, thanks, and suspect you know fuck all about music (and anything else, judging by other posts I've seen). Added to which pretty much everyone else who's expressed an opinion thinks you're talking out of your ignorant arse too :)

So like I said, no angular, stuttery riffs, no staggered shouty vocals and definately no dance based drumming?

Like I said if you think Franz Ferdinand can be said to resemble Gang of Four I fail to see how Bloc Party don't, they sound much closer to me.

And I was saying that Franz Ferdinand get lumped in with Gang of Four in the first place you stupid cunt.

I really like them. They're not the best band ever, but a strong smart indie outfit.

no you didn't.

revol68 said:
yeah but I bet you love boring everyone by banging on about how they are basically just a a rip off of Gang of Four. :p

revol68 said:
They sound nothing like Gang of Four??!! WTF are you on about! Even their lyrical content is similar to a degree. Gang of Four were dancy post punk and Bloc Party are in a similar vein only twnety years later.

So - a liar as well as a cloth-eared moron :D

whatthe fuck are you banging on about now?

my argumet is that bloc partys sound has more than a passing resembelance to gang of four, you take issue with that claim yet not the idea that Franz Ferdinand have a similar sound, I think that's fucking retarded, Bloc Party are much closer to Gang of Four than Franz Ferdinand.

Perhaps you could explain what i've lied about?

Also it's funny that the members of Gang of Four don't dispute the similarities in sound.

What do you think of new bands, like the Futureheads and Bloc Party, and their connection to your sound?

I think "respect." If writers want to say these bands are good -- and they're great -- but they're borrowing from Gang of Four, I mean, that's cool. I suppose I'm a little pissed that some of these bands are just borrowing freely from us.

Note, he doesn't reply, 'oh they sound nothing fucking like us'.

you claimed a couple of posts back that you said that Franz Ferdinand got compared to GOF, not Bloc Party.

I've wasted enough time on this, to be honest, you're beyond hope.

Next - Revol68 claims The Go! Team have a big led Zeppelin influence.

And if Bloc Party seriously claim to have never heard or been influenced by Gang of Four I'm calling them fucking liars.

You can sound like another band by accident, y'know.

I was in a band once and everyone said we were like Husker Du. Didn't know them at the time then we listened to them and realised people were right.

We sounded about as much like them as BP sound like Gang of Four, I reckon.

No I never retracted the claim that Bloc Party get compared (quite rightly though often overegged) to Gang of Four, I merely added the point that if people can accept a similarity between Franz Ferdinand and Gang of Four then it baffles me they can't see a bigger one between Bloc Party and Gang of Four.

Aye but it's well easy to sound like Husker Du cos their sound got past through hundreds of subsequent melodic punk bands. I'd still find it hard to believe that Bloc Party had never heard of Gang of Four, possible maybe, likely no chance.
Reagardless it's still obvious that there is a similarities in sound.

The annoying thing is I usually find myself arguing with people who just call Bloc Party a poor rip off of Gang of Four, but now I'm dealing with some muppets arguing there's no similarities.

there's not, you're a fucking numpty.

Funny I just played 'The Marshalls are Dead' and 'I Found that Essence Rare' back to back and asked my house mate if he thought there was any similarity, unsuprisingly like the man from Del Monte he say 'Yes'.

Having googled Gang Of Four i can see what you mean, though I can see other paths that sound could have come through.

When I first heard Bloc Party my first thought was that it was like The Cure might have wound up sounding if they'd been more influenced by dance and hip hop.

This thread made me listen to a couple of Bloc Party songs out of curiosity.

They were really bad, and fuck-all like the Gang of Four - even if the Gang of Four had also been shit the comparison wouldn't be a good one.

Well, I like them and I don't care. :)

The EPs and the first album, anyway - horribly disappointed by the second one.

And I think more or less illustrates my earlier point.

I like em. They were very good live, though let down by the sound not being big enough to fill the venue.
